Amazon.com

While a furious storm rages, three young men materialize in Tokyo in 2007: friendly, blond Ryo; aloof, serious Koji; and irrepressible, offbeat Gawl. They've been sent from the future to prevent genetic biologist Takuma Nakasa from making the discoveries that will lead to the creation of metamorphic humanoid "Generators." Posing as students at the prestigious Oju Academy, the trio take a room in the home of abrasive fellow student Masami. Ryo and Koji try to maintain low profiles, but Gawl invariably sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb. Masami decides to play Nancy Drew and discover the secrets of the attractive but reclusive new students. She mistakenly identifies Gawl as a local stalker but continues to pick on him, even after she's proven wrong. Someone from the future has already staked out the Academy and is protecting Nakasa with Generators, human-seeming creatures who transform into bizarre monsters. Gawl, who is also a Generator, must destroy these monsters--and hide the fights and their aftereffects from Masami's prying eyes. Director Seiji Mizushima makes the trio's mission seem crucial without revealing too much about it, and the result is an entertaining, fast-paced, and suspenseful series that should enjoy an enthusiastic audience in America. Contains these episodes: 1. "The Visitors," 2. "Flowers and Girls," 3. "Curiosity." Unrated; suitable for ages 10 and up; occasional risqué humor and some violence, restricted to monster versus monster. --Charles Solomon

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good, May 31, 2001

For the record, I watched this series in Japanese with subtitles and avoided reading the promo ADV Films wrote about it; that said, I liked it a lot. Your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't chalk this up as "anime of all time", but it is surprisingly good. I liken it to Sailor Moon meets Evangelion...at least in this first disk. It jumps between the silly -- Gawl and his interaction with Masami -- and the serious -- the three guys trying to, y'know, save the world.

The guys are drawn cute, and Gawl is an unlikely but likeable hero. The battle scenes and transformation sequences are nifty. The tug-of-war between Gawl and Masumi reminds me of Akane and Ranma. While there is very little new ground covered by this anime story-wise, the first disk was solid action with a compelling (albeit slightly confusing) storyline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good anime!, May 11, 2001

Knowing almost nothing about it, I purchased Generator Gawl Vol. 1 with few expectations. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Simply wonderful!

GG isn't a deep, brain-busting anime like SE Lain or Evangelion (which I enjoy immensely, by the way), but it is a sterling example of what fun anime is all about. Character design is exceptional, the story is sufficiently interesting and well-paced, the humor is clever and not over-done, and the action sequences are first-rate. You just can't help but cheer each time Gawl "generates" into his alter ego to dish out a beating to the bad guys. I've heard a lot of complaints about GG's lack of originality, but honestly, I don't think it's a problem. If you're one of those folks who insist Nadesico is a re-make of Robotech, you might have hang-ups with Gawl. Otherwise, you'll enjoy it. I do wish there were four episodes per DVD instead of three, but it's so enjoyable I can overlook it (but don't get used to it ADV!).

Surprisingly, GG hasn't garnered the hype or fan following in the U.S. it deserves - at least not yet. It easily earns my recommendation. It's simply good anime!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome Anime, July 12, 2001
A Kid's Review
Genorator Gawl is a story of 3 teenagers who jump back in time to Sept. 2007 and try and save the world from "dark generators"(those are the bad guys), only problem is they were supposed to jump a year earlier. The 3 characters are: Gawl (he's the main character and has the power of generating), Koji(he's kinda the leader of the of the operation), and Ryo(he's kinda the smart guy and his name's pronounced Ro). Also there's a girl called Masami and another called Natsumi(they're friends of Gawl, Koji, and Ro). I think that generator gawl is an awsome anime saga and that it is hilarious! There's this 1 part in the 2nd episode were Gawl is trying to catch a butterfly in his hands and he keeps missing it and gets really frustrated, it's hilarious! Also there's this strange scientist called "Tekuma Nekasa" who I think cracks the gene code for generating. All anime lovers I urge you to watch it. It has fantastic graphics and battle scenes in all 3 of the 1st 3 episodes (not volumes I've only seen vol. 1). On a scale of 1 to 10, i'd give a 1,000,000!!!!!!!!!!! ADV Films really picked a good saga to translate and sell. Props to the opening theme!
