Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
It is frustrating how little information is available on this game. Reviews are scarce (CGR has one on YouTube) and some written reviews exist, but not by any real gaming site. This and the price-point of this title may already give an indication what to expect. I am unfamiliar with Generator Rex as a cartoon series, except for some trailers on other CN DVD's, but that should not be a requirement for enjoying a game.

The premise is simple, a superhero teenager, think a more edgy Ben 10, with the ability to change parts of his body into mechanical 'builds' that are used to smash opponents and some elements in the environment in order to stop the evil Van Kleiss (beats me why bad guys always get German sounding names, in this case with a Dutch 'van' thrown in). This is a largely side-scrolling brawler, interupted with some stages where you are tasked to steer Rex while he is freefalling out of a plane and one time while driving his hoverbike. This driving segments features clunky unresponsive controls and even ask you to shoot at moving targets while driving and trying to avoid cars that get dropped right in front of you. Another annoyance is jumping, I died at least 20 times on my first run through of one level, because of the unresponsive and odd jump controls. These stages in particular are frustrating. Generally as Rex moves slow and doesn't seem to respond immediately to button presses, this is not a big issue in normal brawling stages, but in the driving stages and while trying to jump on moving platforms, it makes them difficult to get right. Fortunately the game is very forgiving. In other words its really easy, plenty of (invisible) check-points, that onfortunately bar you from returning to an earlier part of a stage.
