5.0 out of 5 stars A Scottish Lady and A English duke, not a good blend for Love
A English duke to become a Scottish noble! The very ideal was scandalous! That this odious man should also be her new guardian was completely intolerable to young Brandy Robertson. Yet to her amazement, Ian proved as much of a surprises to Brandy as his independent, outspoken ward did to him. A wonderful book Well worth the time it takes to read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great writing but a fairly weak story.

An English duke to become a Scottish noble! The very idea was scandalous! That this odious man should also be her new guardian was completely intolerable to spirited young Brandy Robertson. But at least she wouldn't have to meet Ian Carmichael, the new Earl of Penderleigh, for surely he wouldn't trouble himself to come to Scotland.

Yet, to her amazement, Ian did indeed visit Penderleigh Castle, and he proved as much a surprise to Brandy as his independent, outspoken ward did to him. Handsome, charming, generous, Ian was everything she could desire. But when he persisted in treating her like an innocent child and seemed determined to wed a lady with whom he obviously didn't suit, Brandy decided to take matters into her own hands and show this insufferably obstinate lord just how much of a woman she truly was...

I'm not generally a huge fan of 17 year olds heroine's and this book seems to fall into the pitfalls that all these sort of Regency's attempt, including a much too knowing heroine, who is very brave, very beautiful etc..etc..etc.. The story seems okay but the two main characters are lacking soul and I just never really could get very involved in the storyline. The writing is very good as you would expect from very early Catherine Coulter and that will not let you down.

3.0 out of 5 stars Generous Earl and bad blood clans, December 2, 2010

I, too, enjoyed Ms. Coulter's wonderful writing skill. But I had a terrible time to enjoy the story. Perhaps because it was December when I read this book which really put me out of the homecoming, holly jolly spirit. This book was filled with greed, lust, power-struggle, back-stabbing, manipulating families that covered span of three generations. I was so out of patience with these dysfunctional family members, and tried desperately to get out of this gloomy mood (I felt for while I was trapped in the dark underworld), that I pretty much just skipped to the ending. At least one thing was for certain: That it was with a happy ending.
