3.0 out of 5 stars A record that deserves respect but fails to excite, September 5, 2009
This review is from: Genes & Jeans (Audio CD)
Israeli pop star Noa is a bright , bright lady . One who is writing and releasing music in order to express her thoughts and feelings , one who won't hesitate to speak her mind . Having refused to perform in the occupied West Bank , she condemns settlements and is also a vocal supporter of a two state solution . Her interviews sparkle with wit and her wonderful new blog is food for thought for fans and readers . She hasn't hesitated to cooperate with a palestinian singer , covering " We Can Work It Out " by the Beatles and then , taking that cooperation ( and the message of coexistence ) even further , the duo participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 , representing Israel . Unlike most of the lame fame-starving pop singers of , let's say my country , Greece , Mrs.Nini has personallity to spare .

On record though things are a bit less challenging . " Genes And Jeans " is an album full of elegant but conventional pop with some ethnic touches here and there . Sounding like something inbetween Celine Dion and Ofra Haza , Noa's latest has it's heart in the right place but is often too mainstream to catch the attention of younger listeners . The artist herself is aiming to explore her Yemeni roots but at the same moment , choses to sing most of the material in english in order to adress her music vision to a wider audience . As a result , some of the authenticity a foreighn language gives to a world music record is stripped away . The voice is great as always and there are many beautiful moments here like " In Your Eyes " , " Something Has Change " , " Follow Your Heart " and " Heart And Head " which talks about a young bride's insecure feelings on her wedding day , but the overall result is probably less adventurous than Noa would liked to.
