One of VNV Nation's best singles,
By Neo Murtle (Acworth, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Genesis 1 (Audio CD)
Genesis is certainly one of VNV Nation's best songs, lyrically and musically. Both the Genesis.1 and Genesis.2 singles have the original version of the song Genesis as the first track, plus 3 additional tracks. On Genesis.1, the second track is Weltfunk, a new instrumental track which is pretty good. The third track is the Icon Of Coil remix of Genesis, and is mostly a longer and clearer version of Genesis with heavier bass. The forth track is the Thomas P. Heckmann remix, and is similar to the first remix but with slightly distorted lyrics and music. My only complaint about the Genesis singles is that I don't think it was necessary to release these 7 tracks on two singles seperately. If you are a VNV Nation fan, you should definetly get at least one of the Genesis singles. If you are looking for an album to introduce you to VNV Nation's sound however, I recommend getting one of their full-length albums instead such as Empires or Praise The Fallen

Normally avoidant of any single because they don't fulfill any need requirements in my daily ingestion of newly acquired sustenance, I nonetheless found myself attract to the two VNV Nation Genesis singles because they advertised unreleased tracks on them and because it was a prequel to FuturePerfect. Fortunately, this did some good at the time, giving me two tracks to listen to that were "new" and two extra tracks of Genesis (one done by Icon of Coil and one a Thomas P. Heckmann version), shwocasing a great EBM song. Unfortunately, after the album was out, I found that the buy was somewhat useless because of the newness of the unreleased track herein. While it is true to an extent that these are new tracks,it is sort of misleading as well because the "track" on Volume 1 is nothing more than a technotronic instrumental entitled Weltfunk. It is somewhat basic, too, giving me nothing more that the feeling that I'm listening to a song that would lead into another song, like something of an abandoned introduction.

Everyone knows what they're getting with an album like this: remixes of a song they already like. Weltfunk is one I could take or leave but the Icon of Coil version makes it worth it. This is just a single though so for goodness sake find it somewhere cheaper than the $12 Amazon is charging! (I'm thinking of a word that rhymes with flyTunes...)

VNV Nations first commercial successful single,

VNV Nation is already around for a couple of years and big stars in the EBM / DARKWAVE / GOTHIC scene and might only topped by Project Pitchfork, Wumpscut and Covenant.
This single was the first single of VNV with commercial success and listed in the top 50 single charts of some European countries (Germany and England). VNV made a few compromises to make this single "mainstream-acceptable". However, the compromises were only minimal. A CD that is good for everybody. It was not a betrayal of the "Underground" EBM Scene... It is more a reminder for the masses that this kind of music is already around for decades and also prove again that you can have commercial success without sacrificing the style (other examples are Depeche Mode and Wolfsheim). Do not get me wrong. VNV Nation is more EBM/Techno (faster) and not classic EBM such as Depeche Mode. If you are into fast and strong beat techno music, this single is something for you. Genesis: Great Remixes,
By
This review is from: Genesis 1 (Audio CD)
I was impressed by the single version of 'Genesis' that I decided to purchase this single ep that included two Genesis remixes and the previously unreleased "Weltfunk". I really enjoyed Weltfunk that reminded me of earlier VNV Nation works like 'Tempest'. It is a instrumental piece that would make good background music.
The two Genesis remixes are the standouts on this single CD, my favourite being the Thomas P. Hackmann version that had a techno trip feel. The mixes fused the voice of Ronan Harris well with the fusion of the beats. The band 'Icon of Coil' did another remix and it is also great to hear. This single is for all devout VNV fans and collectors to add to the ever increasing library.

VNV Nation's greatest song ever made,
By A Customer
This review is from: Genesis 1 (Audio CD)
When I bought this single, I really never heard any of their songs before. So I was going out on a limb and gave it a try. I could not believe how great the song was. After that I was won over. I have already started to collect their music. My favorite album by far is Futureperfect. Because it has some of their soft songs and really hard pounding ones. So if you like singles of this artist I would recommend this because it has an unreleased track "weltfunk." Or if you've never heard their earlier work. Then this single is for you. You will not be disappointed!

True EBM or true mainstream ?,
By Andreas Dinesen (Copenhagen, Denmark) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Genesis 1 (Audio CD)
The two wankers of VNV Nation has done it again ! Flooding the world with their smooth synth waves and classical beats they have produced yet another hit on the EBM scene, perhaps a hit too mainstream for the wicked hardcore listeners. However they have sustained their ability to write in their typical melancolic and almost poetic lyrics :) Nice !For those of you who have never heard VNV Nation before this CDM release is definately a good start. However it would do them more justice if you tried one of the full albums like Empires ... |
