Biography

VNV Nation is an Anglo-Irish electronic dance, EBM, "futurepop" duo formed in 1990, comprising Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson.

Two earlier albums were released (Advance and Follow (1995) and Praise the Fallen (1998)) but it was their third album Empires (1999) which broke them and secured commercial success. They moved further into the mainstream with 2002's Futureperfect although the die-hard fans… Read more in Amazon's VNV Nation Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Harboring the Need for Newness, February 2, 2003

This review is from: Genesis 2 (Audio CD)
Quite opposed to the marketing of singles for anything other than hyping utensils, I normally leave their consumption to other needy souls. Still, when I saw that VNV Nation would have a new album coming within a month of these releases and that the two Genesis singles had new tracks on them, I found myself unable to resist their pull. For a time it was a good thing on both fronts, too, because Genesis is a great VNV nation song and some of the mixes provided (on this on, there is a c92 version by VNV and the ivory frequency version), and now this one is still good because it has something extra entitled Left Behind.

Within FuturePerfect, there were quite a few songs that went beyond the typical VNV Nation sounds and approached some of the works with somber, more saddening, sounds. This was readily evident when one listened to Left Behind because of its lack of the EBM flow that normally accompanied VNV's works as it addressed the feelings of being left behind by everyone. Honestly, I find it to be haunting in its own right, though, sad to a point and very reflectant of the pull that Futureperfect has on at least one member of their audience; that of teary comprehension.

So, if you are a VNV Nation consumer already and are looking for something more to take into your homes, this works out well. Although it only has the four tracks herein, it still has something original and, above that, worthy of listening to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another classic VNV Nation Single, June 17, 2007
By
This review is from: Genesis 2 (Audio CD)
Genesis.2 takes off where Genesis.1 leaves with 3 more remixes/mixes of the hit song 'Genesis' from the Futureperfect album. While I like the album original, I find these remixes of the original song much better especially the c92 remixed version that Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson have manipulated skillfully.

In Genesis.2 Ronan has released the previously unreleased 'Left Behind' which is a sombre song that is melancholy. I find that many of VNV Nation's unreleased songs that don't make it into fully fledged albums are well worth the listen. I enjoyed the lyrics and the emotion that was sung by Ronan.

The best remix of Genesis would be for me, the final song that is the Ivory Frequency Version that goes for a good 7 mins and has a more electronica feel to the rhythm.

This single is definitely for the fans and enthusiasts. Genesis.2 should be purchased with .1 for optimal enjoyment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Out of all the great songs on Futureperfect..., November 19, 2004
This review is from: Genesis 2 (Audio CD)
VNV is responsible for some of the greatest club mixes in the last couple of years...So it is odd that the mix of their own song would be so phoned in. This is the most forgetable song on Futureperfect. They could have had three or four really strong singles from that album, and they put out GENESIS?! Why? The first fifteen seconds are great, with the inspiring astronaut voice sample and the future pop bubbling in the background...but then it degenerates into a limp, meandering, simpering that is as flacid as it is meaningless. WHY WHY WHY didn't Beloved get a US single? EPICENTERE?!!! NO single...instead we get TWO singles for Genesis? it's no wonder the industrial scene is so sad in the United States. Don't buy this single...save up and find a copy of Burning Empires if you need VNV mixes.
