Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Imagining God in the act of creation, this picture book retells the familiar story from the Book of Genesis. A poet with a background in Bible translation, Shaw knows something about the creative process as well as biblical texts. She offers insights into the mind of the Maker, when, after imagining animals and breathing them to life, God thinks "Excellent! Good work, God work, if I do say so myself." The text follows the outline of the traditional story, though stopping more than once to observe, "We don't know how it happened. We weren't there to see." More informal than most Bible translations, the language is sometimes prosaic, but at other times it is invigorated by this less-than-traditional approach. The artwork, in black and white until the creation of color on the third day, pulses with energy. Sweeping lines express the forces of the universe and varied forms and colors celebrate the diversity found in nature. A fine, modern alternative to more traditional tellings of the oldest story. 4.0 out of 5 stars Read this with a child, January 24, 2007
This review is from: The Genesis of It All (Hardcover)
There's as much joyful as their is almighty in the God of The Genesis of It All. Luci Shaw's picture book ( illustrated by Sr. Huai-Kuang Miao and Sr. Mary Lane) about the Creation of the Earth and its occupants is full of swirls and twirls of teeming life and streaming light that merge and emerge anew with more and more of the metaphorical, magical truth of Genesis 1. Take hold of a child's hand while you read this book and become a part of the story and you'll feel the abundant love of a joyful God wrapping you in light and life and transcendence all at once. It's a fun book, the first few pages of the biography of a Creator God who just loves to make things, who rejoices in every form of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding, Imaginative Retelling of the Creation Story, July 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Genesis of It All (Hardcover)

Lucy Shaw is a gifted poet and her creativity shines through this book. The words are almost lyrical and although the book is written for children I loved reading it. The illustrations are larger than life, colorful, and imaginative. Lucy Shaw tells the creation story as though God is talking to Himself as He ponders what to make next. Whimsical comments like, "And it wasn't easy.", or "It was very tricky" frequently follows each step of creation.

I'm a church librarian and I can attest to the popularity of the book. It always gets checked out as soon as it is checked in. The text is faithful to the Biblical account of creation and that's important to me.

This is a book that you and your children will be drawn to again and again just to savor each word and image. A wonderful, different telling of the creation story.

This is a beautifully illustrated book that shows, in terms that children and adults both can enjoy, the creation story. Lovely book!
