Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This IMAX presentation wraps up three years of creaky grade school science in a mere half-hour. The film gorgeously envisions (although in pan-and-scan, rather than widescreen) the "voyage of the continents" from the inceptive supernova blast that created the world through the "echoes of chaos everywhere"--the birth of mankind on the planet. Genesis explores how volcanoes and earthquakes continually reshape the earth's crust and how, just as humans shed old cells and gain new, our planet goes through through such cataclysmic events. In the search for answers to the unanswerable, Genesis peers at civilizations--such as that of the Minoans, who created the myth of the lost city of Atlantis--that have been destroyed by the "stretch marks of creation" despite their sophistication and adaptability. A dozen schools of thought merge and converge in this attempt to find answers, and the result is a mix of natural science, anthropology, wonder, and beauty that forms a fascinating, provoking look at Earth and how life fits--and resists--its scheme and grand plan. --Paula Nechak

Product Description

The great Rift Valley in Africa, a 4,00 mile crack in the earth's crust. It is the result of continental fracturing that began some 20 million years ago. Volcanie eruptions, such as the spectacular eruption of Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano featured in Genesis, are the results of powerful tectonic processes which are continually reshaping the earth's surface. From that early moment when a supernova explodes in a blast of light and sound, the Genesis audience doesn't just have a front row seat at the creation of the world. The audience is inside the creation itself and made aware in the most forceful ways that creation is still continuing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Award Worthy, January 19, 2000

Of course this isn't a music video of the group Genesis! Why would IMAX do a music video? I haven't seen too many IMAX films but this would encourage me to see more. This film was very well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, June 27, 2003

This review is from: Genesis (Large Format) (DVD)
Hmmmm...I happen to like high school science if it is done well and I really enjoy watching this video with my 5 year old. It does sum up all the basic geography based on plate tectonics and I learned some very interesting human history as well (I never did understand what happened to the Minoan culture).
This movie certainly could have had better narration or better music, but it is still a great movie. It is entertaining, educational and has some simply wonderful shots of mountains, volcanos (above and below water), islands, etc. If you have a curious child of any age in your home, get this video. My daughter loves it and so do I!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, April 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Genesis (Large Format) (DVD)
A bunch of untalented folks got together and made a film. Annoying orchestral music on a noisy soundtrack accompany a boring high-school lesson about plate tectonics. There was nothing interesting or compelling... the narration was dull. The music was also uninspired, and as soon as the film began I heard hiss over my speakers. The picture seemed to flicker and there was noticeable dirt and occasional spots on the film, which really surprised me. We're supposed to be impressed by a few shots of mountains and oceans, with helicopter blades in many shots? There are more impressive pictures in the latest National Geographic magazine! This film perhaps would have been impressive in the 80s, but not today!
