Review

2009 Moonbeam Fantasy Award Winner for Excellence in Literature

Named Dragonroots Magazine's Best New Fantasy Saga of 2009

The characters in Farmers & Mercenaries are well-developed. Their stories are told in alternating chapters, and readers easily become invested in the fate of each. The pace of the book is quick and the story lines solid. Readers will turn pages late into the night just to find out what will happen next. With Farmers & Mercenaries, fans of the fantasy genre have another group of characters to get to know and love. I can't wait for the next in the series. --Lindsey Losnedahl - Las Vegas Review Journal

The deeper you read, the more drawn into the story and characters you will become. I am looking forward to more books by Maxwell Alexander Drake and Imagined Interprises, Inc. --Amber Campbell - Fantasy Book Reviewer, Examiner.com

...by the end I was mesmerized so that I could not put it down till I had finished it. Drake does a good job of developing the characters and melding their paths throughout the book. The ending was a good set up for book two so I can hardly wait to see how the story continues. --Antya Gilson - Paper Dragon Ink

I have purchased the second book and look forward to reading that as well.

The chapters of the story each follow one of the main characters through their individual stories and the book rotates through those characters randomly.
Drexes
Drake has created a fully believable fantasy world and populated it with characters that I found to be very well developed.

I loved this book, it is refreshing to read a book where it starts you right into the story. At times I had to put the book down, and blink a couple of times to make sure I was in the real world. It immerses you with the characters and their feelings and struggles. Can't wait until book Two.

I see that the editor has his own link on Amazon. I wonder if I could complain to him directly?

The story isn't bad. It's a little cliche, and uses a lot of annoying fantasy tropes such as names with too many unnecessary apostrophes, women who are always beautiful and often royalty, falling in love with the broke, naive main character who inevitably has an incredibly rare magical talent. The language can be very stilted and not flow very easily. For all that, the elements of the story are interesting and the plot is going somewhere.

However, the guy who edited this book needs to be fired. This book (and I have the paper copy) is filled with spelling errors: it's instead of its, sparing instead of sparring, spurning instead of spurring, just lots of typos where a similarly and correctly spelled word is mistakenly used. Note to future editors: it isn't enough to just use Microsoft Word's spellcheck and look for the red wavy line. You actually have to make sure the words are used correctly in context. One typo in the entire book could be an amusing red herring. Two, forgivable, but I've seen over a dozen so far and I haven't even finished it yet. Very unprofessional job.

I've read a lot of really great fantasy. This isn't it. It's okay fantasy. It has potential. It will entertain you for a few hours. But there's nothing to separate it from other fantasy and there are a lot of far better novels out there. If you can't find this on sale, then I can't recommend paying full price.

I am an unabashed Fantasy junkie. I love great epic fantasy; it is by far my favorite Genre, when done well. Sadly it hasn't been done well by a new author in a long, long time. In a market full of old favorites and dull imitators Drake emerges as a fresh new voice with a great new world and series. His characters are well developed, his world rich and detailed and the plot intriguing and exciting. I cannot describe to you my joy at finally finding a new fantasy author who has the talent and storytelling ability of the old masters without being forced to copy their work. I loved this book and I can't wait for the next book in the series. You need to start reading this series now, because I guarantee you will be re-reading it for years.

There are very few novels in the fantasy genre that make you think, wow, thats different, Farmers and Mercenaries fits this bill. To often in this genre, authors lean on established races and cultures with a tweak here or a twist there. Drake does an outstanding job of developing both believable human characters, but more importantly, he takes a risk by creating unique non-human characters that do not fit the standard profile, characters that do not seem like "humans with fur", and frankly, the reader reaps the reward! There is a visceral, raw feel that one feels while reading about beast Klain, and there is a cold, alien aura around the ancient Elmorians that is developed through the eyes of the other characters in the book. All in all Drake expertly develops his world, its people and his plot in such a way that leads the reader to want to turn the next page. I eagerly await the next volume in this saga!

Using my wife's account to comment on Maxwell Alexander Drake's first book in his Genesis of Oblivion Saga after the author was kind enough to give her a copy recently in Las Vegas...he even autographed it for me!
I read alot but not usually much in the way of fantasy. It took me a few chapters to get a 'feel' for the world in which I found myself traveling through and then the "essence" of the book captured my imagination and I was enthralled with the rich environment MAD has created.
I may not become a committed fantasy reader, but I am now surely a Maxwell Alexander Drake fan. The major problem with reading this book is having to wait another five years to complete my Genesis of Oblivion journey. John P.

The characters pull you into their story from the very first paragraph. Reading the book, I felt like I was a part of the world and the story, not just an observer from the outside. I am looking forward to the next one and the continuation of the story of this exciting band of heroes.
