3.0 out of 5 stars Not their best, December 16, 2002
This review is from: Genesis - The Way We Walk: Live in Concert (DVD)
If you like the Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance albums, get this DVD. If you want to hear anything else, you'll be disappointed. The best thing about this DVD is it's the entire concert and not something edited down (although early on in the tour they went into Mama from Hold On My Heart; that would've been a nice addition). If you like old Genesis, the Old Medley is great but only offers short bits and a hint of what those songs could sound like if played in their entirety. They played it early on to get it out of the way, then got back to the new stuff. And the commentary isn't very interesting. At one point a cel phone rings and you hear one side of a conversation. They could've at least stopped the commentary and started over at that point. And they just seem tired. If you want to see the band as they were right before they hit it really big and Phil Collins' solo career took off, get the Mama Tour video if you can find it. It's got the band at their best and most energetic, with a nice mix of old and new (at the time) songs. Hopefully it will come out on DVD someday, and with additional footage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing concert !, June 16, 2005
This review is from: Genesis - The Way We Walk: Live in Concert (DVD)
I love concerts on DVD and this is one of my favorite. The live performance by Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks with the participation of two talented musicians is stunning.

All songs are played with respect to the original recording. From oldies on a rock mix including a few hits from albums of the 70s with Peter Gabriel to great songs from the 80s like Invisible Touch, Home By The Sea, Tonight Tonight, and then new songs from that time (best of We Can't Dance album is played on the setlist, including No Son Of Mine, Driving The Last Spike, Fading Lights, Dreaming While You Sleep, etc.)

Please, old Genesis fan with no respect for Mr. Collins talents as a vocalist, listen to his interpretation of songs from Gabriel's time as lead vocal. It is very good ! Collins sings with a lot of emotions on this concert film. Same thing for the good playing by other musicians. With the good multi-angle feature, which is on of the best available on a live DVD, you can enjoy a global angle as well as individual performances. At least 2 angles are available at all time, well chosen for each song, and most of the songs offer 4 angles to choose from.

Extras could have been better, but 4 angles and a commentary track on a over-two-hour concert uses a lot of space. Still, there are a few interviews available. They consist of questions asked individually to the three members of the band.

My only complain is the sound recording on the DVD, which is not loud enough. You need a good amp to enjoy the maximum of it. With a good sound system and quite high quality headphones, I was satisfied. Picture is nice, and menus are great.

You can view a map of the stage from which you can see where are located cameras of different angles for different songs, so you know for example that # 3 on No Son Of Mine is spotted on Tony Banks playing keyboards.

Overall, if you like Genesis music, from Gabriel's period or newer songs, this is a terrific DVD to had to your collection with hours of viewing for a good price value.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you only by one genesis video this year, get this one., May 30, 1999
By A Customer
This is their best concert on video. They have released at least four concert videos from four consecutive tours, but this one blows them all away! Their performance of Dreaming While You Sleep is tremendous. I wish they included that one on the live cd. Also noteworthy are Home By The Sea, Tonight Tonight Tonight, and the old medley, which are excellent performances. It may get tiresome about halfway through Driving The Last Spike, but once you get past that song, there's no stopping. If you don't own any live Genesis videos yet, get this one first! you won't be sorry. It also has a 15 minute long history of the band and behind the scenes look at the I Can't Dance tour before the 140 minute concert starts. It is recorded at Earls Court in London, the same place where Pink Floyd's "Pulse" is filmed at.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good!!, February 8, 2003
By
This review is from: Genesis - The Way We Walk: Live in Concert (DVD)
This DVD isn't perfect, but true fans of Genesis should enjoy it immensely. Unfortunately, we have little else in the way of Genesis concert footage to compare to, so we HAVE to like it!It's tough for a band that has as much material as Genesis to decide what they can play in a two hour set. Obviously the focus is on late 80's and early 90's releases, which means they don't have much time to spend on the old stuff. Those of us who saw them in the late 70's will want SO much more of Squonk, Dance..., The Lamb, The Musical Box, etc. These were truly awe inspiring live compositions, and it is a shame they only included them in a medley. We can only hope for the future!

Also slightly disappointing is the sound quality. For the band that was so creative with deep bass in their early years, this recording is fairly thin. There is virtually no sub woofer track despite the 5.1 label and the volume in surround sound mode bonces up and down annoyingly. I even tried two copies, because I figured mine was defective!

The good news is that the band is SO tight live. Their renditions of studio tracks are accurate to the original and yet still different enough so they don't feel canned. Chester Thompson and Darryl Stuermer are technically solid, and fill out the sound enormously on stage. Mike Rutherford is a decent enough guitar player, but the hard stuff seems to be left to Stuermer. Tony Banks never seems ruffled, and sometimes you wonder if he is really enjoying himself, or just going through the motions. His song writing and keyboard skills are unquestioned, however.

Phil is the consumate showman, dancing, telling jokes, and playing drums. His duet with Chester is definitely a highlight of the DVD. Phil seems to really enjoy his time behind the drums best, and it's the only time he really gets lost in the music. The light and video show are pretty good as well.

I would highly recommend this DVD to any hard core Genesis fan as well as those who discovered them in the 80's when they became more commercial. There's good stuff here for all. And for the old timers - please give us a "Second's Out" DVD!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great concert, very poor packaging, August 22, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a great DVD, too bad the packaging is sooo shabby and the documentation is so poor. You would think for the price this company is charging for this dvd you would get:1} a nice case. 2} nice booklet outlining the concert with photos and song listings Plus Plus Plus. No booklet no photos, not one ounce of documentation anywhere to be found, just two really flimsy discs in the cheapest case I have ever gotten a dvd in. At 50$+ This is the most I have ever paid for a DVD. Its really a shame that they don't give one of the best bands of all time and great concert overall, the packing and care it deserves.Even the DVDs themselfs look shabby at this price no excuse for this.In the future I will avoid GutDVD, they really gutted this package and charged out the Ying yang. At least the music is still great they could not diminish that even though they tried their hardest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent live performance - must have, April 26, 2000
By
The last Genesis-tour with Phil Collins offers a nice mix of longer progressive tracks (Home by the sea, Domino, Driving the last Spike) and shorter single hits. "Dreaming while you sleep" is a high point and is live available on CD on the "Never a Time" Live EP released in 1993. Collins sounds solid and confident on vocals , Chester Thompson's drumming is very aggressive and gets the most out of the "lighter" single hits. Effects are great. I was fortunate enough to see a show on this tour and the visual effects in "Domino" are very impressive. This is as good as a live performance put on video as I've ever seen.

Highly Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Feels like you're at the concert!!, June 3, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Genesis - The Way We Walk: Live in Concert (DVD)
I was so impressed with this dvd set! The concert is great and the number of cameras they had along with the superb editing really make you feel like you' re at the show. The multi-angle feature is awesome! To me, it's totally worth having to split up the show on 2 dvds to add the angle options. It really feels like you're watching it live when you pick an angle and watch it uncut for a while. I especially liked some of the isolated cameras that were on Phil so I could see some of the funny and interesting things he was doing which you couldn't always necessarily see in the full edit. Phil really gives it his all in this show, and though his voice cracks a few times, he really sings the heck out of each and every song. Ample screen time is also given to Tony, Michael, Chester, and Daryl. The interviews included on both dvds with Mike, Phil and Tony are great because they give some nice insights into the concert set and song histories. But what happily surprised me most about this concert is that none of the songs were from the same recordings that were on the live albums that went along with this tour! It was great to hear slightly different nuances in these live performances than the ones I am used to hearing on the live cds...like Phil singing a bit of "Misunderstanding" in the old medley instead of "You're Own Special Way", or him calling gasoline "Petro" in "Jesus He Knows Me" for the London audience. The audience was actually one of the only disappointing things about this dvd. For most of it they seem pretty dull and are sitting down and don't appear to add a lot of energy to the show. But luckily near the concert's end they stand up and cheer more and there is more interaction between them and the band. Overall, a fantastic dvd and a great addition to any Genesis fans' library! And the menus and opening to this dvd rock!

This dvd is amazing! ... As to the contents of the dvd, they are amazing. There is 8hrs of footage(counting all the different camera angles you can watch), the song selection is excellent, the bonus stuff and sound is great too! For any Genesis fan, this is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's just plain great!, May 1, 2005

Bassman (Connecticut) - See all my reviews
I just finished watching the DVD and am wondering what all the fuss is about. I'm a Genesis fan from 1977. And I also happen to be a Phil Collins fan. I just like his singing better.

Yes, it shows mostly songs from the latter part of their career, and yes I'd love to see "Supper's Ready", "Cinema Show", and "Fifth" performed in their full, unadulterated form, or at all. But that wasn't gonna happen. Get over it.

First, the DVD is visually stunning. I hadn't the chance to see the boys on this tour, and now wish that I had. I saw them back on the Abacab tour and it turned out to be the only time I'd seen them. The stage and light show alone are worth the price of the disc. And face it, despite what others may say, Genesis WAS a visual, as well as incredibly musical, band. And this type of concert drama and grandeur is sorely lacking in rock and roll.

Second, the songs. Yes, as I'd written earlier, they don't go back to the past more thoroughly, but the performances of the "Old Melody", "Domino"(By the Way, Phil's explanation of the Domino Theory is English comedy at it's best), "Home by the Sea" are stellar, and let's face it, the new stuff (with the exception of "Invisible Touch", never GOT that one) is still better than most of the stuff that their contemporaries were dishing around that time.

Third, the multiple angles blew me away. Concert DVDs have always been touted as being "like you were there". Well, I don't know about the rest of us, but I've never enjoyed the view from the front row. The camera angle from the back REALLY made me feel like I was there. And then I moved in for a closer look. Kind of fun playing director.

Side note: Just about every song has at least 3 or 4 angles from which to view. A BIG plus.

Finally, my only complaint. During the extras interview, there should be a "Play All" option.

That's it. No comments about real or poser Genesis fans. Just that if you love the band, or if you just want to see a Concert performance the way that it REALLY should be filmed, RUN don't walk to get this.
