From Library Journal

This fine short story chronicles the passage of young Rusty Cullen into a new life and new world. Leaving his English family to become a cowboy in Saskatchewan, Rusty joins a cattle crew headed straight into one of the most terrible winters in Canadian history. Stegner's excellent descriptions of men, work, and the weather make it possible to experience the cold, fatigue, and incredible personal trials that these men barely survive. While the story seems remote from lifestyles that most of us understand, Stegner's forceful writing and solid presentation will fascinate listeners. His sage, earthy observations represent a meaningful, realistic, and tough philosophy of life and risk. While lacking a talent for employing different voices, narrator Page Stegner effectively and comfortably reads with a Western twang that is in keeping with the tone of the material. Soulful guitar music introduces each segment and adds to the authentic Western flavor. Recommended for most libraries.

This review is from: Genesis: A Story from Wolf Willow (Audio Cassette)
I've listened to a borrowed copy of this book twice. I like it better than anything else I've ready by Wallace Stegner -- except for his few other stories on the same subject: The early 1900s on the open range in Alberta. Page Stegner's voice is perfect for this book. I've decided that audio books have to be largely poetic to be enjoyable and this one is. Like Raymond Chandler, Stegner knows how to turn a phrase; unlike Chandler, he tells a story you can follow without having to make a big effort at concentration. I know I'll want to hear it again and again.
