Editorial Reviews

Review

Genesis has been in print for almost three decades. The author of Genesis is a writer and has more than 25 years experience in working with genealogy computer programs and databases. This latest edition of Genesis has three sections: basic information and actions for the reader, the use of computers, and a glossary. In section I, "Actions," students immediately apply what has been learned. They complete a pedigree chart and family group sheet, begin a research calendar, interview relatives, and extract details from home documents ... Techniques for the budding computer user are followed by descriptions of library catalogues, computerized indexes and data files, compact discs, and electronic media (e-mail, newsgroups, and the Internet). An explanation of the LDS FamilySearch program is followed by a discussion of organizing data and sharing genealogical information. A fifteen-page glossary of term definitions and applications precedes an index. -- Ancestry Magazine, January/February 1999, vol. 17, no. 1, pp. 10-11, review by Sandra H. Luebking, FUGA.

It's nice to see a beginner's book that gets readers involved in their own research right away. Readers are [soon] filling in their personal pedigree charts and family group sheets (blank forms included). Ms. Nichols stresses that before getting in[to] computer genealogy, the beginner should understand basic "traditional" research methods and sources. Vital records, church records, census records, and family records are well-explained....

The author explains how computers can help genealogists and provides detailed instructions for using FamilySearch and Personal Ancestral File, two data-base programs available at the Family History Library, its centers worldwide, and online. Ms. Nichols also emphasizes that information found in computer files should not automatically be accepted as true, but should be confirmed by outside sources. The information about using the Internet is clear... A glossary provides excellent definitions.

The book gives sound advice for all genealogists, beginners or not...[including] using a discrepancy chart to analyze conflicting information. (Mary Beth Fay, Tuscon, Arizona, in The Federation of Genealogical Societies' FORM, Winter 1999 issue (11:4).) -- Mary Beth Fay

The fourth edition of the Genesis of Your Genealogy is a step-by-step instruction book for the beginner in family history. It is completely updated and revised to include ... use of computers, use of the Internet as a family history resource, and using pictures in family history.

...Section One gives basic instruction with step-by-step procedures on how to begin your family history, tools and techniques needed to organize and record information by computer or on paper; sources available and how to evaluate them. Section Two provides details about computers and family history [including how]...to find ..organize and record, [and] to share genealogical information. Section Three includes a glossary of terms for the family historian. [A] well-prepared index, [and ] "Would you like to know...?" gives a lists of questions answered in this publication. The Genesis of Your Genealogy has been a popular instruction book for beginners in family history since 1969. -- German Genealogical Digest, Fall 1998, vol. 14, no.1 , page 93

The place to start for those who have an interest in family history. Beginners will find up-to-date information on sources, resources, forms, terminology, and all the basic how-tos. Introduces valuable shortcuts that can save years of research such as how to tie into the work others have already done for you and how to use a computer to find, organize, and share information. Read this first or wish you had! -- Deseret Book Club Review, December/Christmas 1996, page 10 --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
