Product Description

The Geneva Sound System Model XS is the world's first portable audio system with true Hi-Fi sound. Inspired by the classic travel clock, it comes in a leather- wrapped clamshell case, about the size of an eyeglass case, that flips open to deliver rich and detailed sound. Closed, it's a stylish accessory small enough to slip into any briefcase. Never before has a hi-fi system been integrated into a case designed for a travel lifestyle. Geneva Sound System Model XS solves this problem with simplicity and elegance. It hides the speakers, amplifiers, radio and alarm clock inside the case, covered in a choice of Geneva's trademark red, white or black finishes. The Geneva Sound System Model XS is not just another clock radio, it is a portable high-fidelity sound system.

Looks Great. Sounds Better. (Fits in a Purse)

Geneva Sound System Model XS
Built-in clock radio and Bluetooth makes it perfect for movies and music in bed

This tiny marvel fuses the latest technologies, yet its simplicity and style evoke two mid-century icons: the first transistor radio and the classic travel alarm clock. Flip open the waterproofed leather case (just over an inch thick) and glorious high-fidelity sound streams from any Bluetooth device or the built-in radio.

The SmartCase, a shatterproof travel hardshell, uses a smart magnet to  automatically shut the system off. This greatly extends the life of the li-ion battery, holding a charge for up to one year.

Connect a smartphone, tablet or laptop via stereo Bluetooth wireless. Or use the original wireless, radio, via the superfine FM tuner. There's also a line-in port for any kind of external audio source.

The TouchLIght controls make it easy to set the clock or alarm. The LED display gives the much-needed visual feedback of system settings that other portable systems simply lack, which is why the others are such a hassle to use. And nothing this size, simply nothing, has ever sounded better.

I think the size is great, very practical and portable, as advertised.

The magnets are held in place by the rim only so when you open the case, the lower metal rim lifts along with the top case pulling away from the lower case portion.

Needless to say I am very unhappy and am going to try returning this beautiful, but extremely flawed speaker.

I own several Tivoli Songbooks, and have owned my Geneva XS since late July (2012). So it's been a month now, and I still haven't decided which I like best.

I've taken the XS, rather than the Tivoli, on two week-long trips. This is because the XS is about half the size of the Tivoli, and can retreat into its shell. Unlike other reviewers, I've had no hinge problems.

The XS on Geneva's website is rated at 12 watts, yet its top volume sounds comparable to the Tivoli. The Tivoli plays voice better, the Geneva, music better. Bass is good on the Tivoli, yet even cleaner on the XS. I wish the XS had a voice/music switch (aka bass boost switch), because for talk shows I'd switch it off.

The XS turns on easily; the button to do so is both electronic and recessed. However, its other controls are easy to confuse.

Sensitivity and selectivity of the XS and Tivoli are comparable. Note that, while it is not obvious, the XS does have an FM antenna.

The XS's display peeking through its grille is stylish.

So, which to buy? Relative to each other, The Tivoli is better stationary, and the XS is better traveling. I've even been able to squeeze the XS in my pants pocket. Still can't decide? Then I recommend flipping a coin, because both the Tivoli and the XS can fill a standard sized room (like a hotel room) with high quality sound.

9/7/12: The only setup needed for the XS was to turn it on; the battery was already installed. I mention this because "The most helpful critical review" mentions problems installing the XSs battery.

I have to say, I love this device. I have a lot of friends in the music industry and they rave about Geneva. I don't know much about all the technical stuff, but I know what I like and what sounds good to me.

I purchased the XS white sound system a few months back, and use it on a fairly regular basis. Physically, the size is perfect. You can toss it in a briefcase, stick in in a jacket pocket, or easily carry it in one had. Lately, I've taken it to the beach with me on warm weekends. When you open it, you just flip the interior speaker up, and hook the catches in the top. That's all the setup you need. It turns on with the touch of one finger, and the controls light up along the top. When it's turned off, the controls disappear for a smooth, clean look. You can switch between radio, bluetooth, or an ipod with one button. Just press the Mode button and the front will display the mode. It has a telescoping antenna for FM radio that gives you great reception. If you want to run an iPod or any other mp3 player, just use the included line in/out cord. Just plug one end into the XS and one end into the headphone jack on your ipod. And that's all it takes. If you have an iphone, or anything with bluetooth capacity, you can just turn on the bluetooth and sync everything wirelessly. If you travel, this device makes a great alarm clock. You can set it to beep, or play music through the radio or your ipod.

This little guy has a rechargeable battery. SImply plug the wall adapter into the unit and and walk away. I've found I can usually get about a week's play out of one charge. That's playing it an hour here, twenty minutes there, and so on.

The sound gets its own paragraph. This little unit really fills a room. Obviously, you won't use it to dj a party or to fill a ball room.

Menu system is a bit unintuituve at first, but not terrible.

There is a full sound, but expect no base out of it -- exceeding 56 or so on the volume menu causes distortion

sustained a drop of about 2ft when a friend accidentally brushed by it and knocked it off the end table -- the minimal force and short fall was enough to snap off the flimsy plastic hinges which hold it to the case. It still works, but simply has difficulty standing correctly now, and is no longer able to hinge in the clamshell. Would have expected significantly more durability for the price, such as hinges which can snap on and off should for instance the device take a tiny fall.

Used with a projector for a portable entertainment system, it gets the job done and fairly well -- not so excellent for music however.

I got my Geneva XS two months ago. I travel 3-5 days a week for work, and this unit has gone everywhere with me. And it works great. I can pair it with my iPhone or iPad to listen to music via bluetooth. I use the radio station to listen to weather, traffic and the games (Go Pats!). It's got a line-in cable, for my wife's old school iPod with no bluetooth. It's wicked simple to use. I've noticed some people said they had a problem with the. Not me. It's tough enough to toss in my bag and go. Battery life lasts a while. So, I definitely recommend it.

I generally don't write reviews, but since this product is kind of esoteric as not a lot of people probably buy this, I figured I would do a review.

I think the size is great, very practical and portable, as advertised. It comes with a felt bag which fits just the speaker, but not the electrical charger. I think this is somewhat impractical.

The speaker works on Bluetooth and with a wire. The problem I have with the wire is that its not attached to the unit and there is no place to store it along with the speaker. Basically it's asking to get lost.

The sound is good, I think as advertised.

I agree with everyone's comments re the teeth that hold the speaker in its open position. They are small and made of plastic, so just asking to be broken.

All in all, I think the speaker is a good choice, because there are so view options on the market for decent, portable speakers. That being said, I don't think it's thought through all the way and could be improved on.
