I also bought my opener from Home Depot but contrary to some of the reviewers, I had little trouble programming the up and down travel limits, although the procedure is clumsy and the instructions are poorly written. (In lieu of this annoying new system, older Genies had mechanical switches that clamped on the track with set screws to define these limits.) The opener worked fine for almost three months, and then the opener failed disastrously. I closed the door and drove away as I normally do, but when I returned a few hours later and tried to open the garage, I found that the opener had over-ridden its down limit. The motor had continued to run and press down with such force that it twisted the door arm like a pretzel, jammed the shuttle to the door end of the drive screw and continued until the shuttle threads were stripped, and bent the door arm out of shape to such an extent it partially twisted the mounting screws from the sheet-metal door. This is a serious safety failing. The door that is coming down is supposed to go back up when it encounters resistance, not try to drive the door and whatever may be under into the garage floor. I imagine that this seriously faulty system is used in other Genie openers as well, so I'd avoid the entire product line if I were you.

A follow-up: Genie took two days to respond to an email about this problem, and then told me that I should call instead of emailing them. Their customer service is as defective as their product.

Another follow-up: called the 800 number, got a tech who said she didn't do warranty and someone would call back. She did say the words, "possible board failure." It's now over two months later and nobody's called back yet.

I bought this unit at Home Depot. No need to check reviews because I've had Genie openers for 40 years, good track record. Not this unit. I could not get it to hold the program.

Support said That even tough I replaced the sensors, I also had to replace the wires, this unit is that sensitive. OK I did that and it worked...for a while. I had to reprogram it again later and it was OK...for a while. Now, fully 5 months old it is acting up again. I thought it was the programming again, but now the part that engages the screw drive appears to be slipping (wearing out).

I will be buying a different unit now even though this one is still under warranty.

I already have a hobby. I don't need this!

I read through the neg reviews here and I think I've had all of the same problems. Very tough to program and then seldom will hold the program long. Now, after nearly a year fighting this thing it is overheating and locking up regularly, sometimes after only one use. Worthless junk, avoid this loser.

Today is the best day because I just replaced this Genie Garage Door opener with a Chamberlain. Genie is the worst opener I have ever owned. It never worked correctly. Sometimes it would just go up 4 inches and stop. And continue doing this until I unplug and then plug it back in. I called Genie, and they sent out someone to replace the a computer board in it, and it still continued to malfunction...all intermittent. Very Frustrating! The customer service at Genie was terrible and they refused to refund my money. This has gone on for 3 years, and finally broke down and replaced it.

DO NOT BUY THIS GENIE OPENER! --- unless you like getting up on a ladder weekly to unplug it and plug it back in. I guess it is a good exercise program!

Here is a copy of the scathing email I sent to the Genie Support Center. I will NEVER buy another Genie product again.

In my futile attempts at programming my new Powerlift 900, I now have 2 solid red lights on at the motor unit and no matter what I push, nothing happens. How do I get back to square one with this thing.

Also, to open my door to get my car in and out I needed to disengage the shuttle from the door arm. Now the shuttle is too far forward to re-engage the door arm. Is there a manual way to rotate the screw drive to draw the shuttle back?

Just a side note: I spent 2 hours trying to program this P.O.S. I was working through the manual, step by step, being careful to follow the directions exactly. After giving up in frustration, I notice a separate piece of paper - an "addendum" to programming. May I suggest scrapping the "addendum" and just printing an updated manual instead. I am very close to just taking this P.O.S. back to Home Depot and buying ANYTHING that doesn't have the name "Genie" on it. My guess is I'm probably not the only DIY'er having this problem.

Another suggestion: There was NOTHING wrong with the mechanical limiter switches you had with the older systems!! They were fully adjustable, and never had problems.

I got the unit from Sears in February 2012, after checking the reviews. I have to say that my installation was easy, setup worked well. It did take me two tries to get the programming figured out, but I haven't had any problems with losing the program. In fact, the unit has worked just fine for almost 11 months.

So why am I writing? My unit failed yesterday. The manual is skimpy on troubleshooting info, and I dreaded calling customer support because of the comments that I read here. Never fear - it's Saturday and the customer support staff is at work and quite helpful. We determined that the circuit board has failed, and they're sending me a new one right away.

I'm always happy to work with a vendor who treats me like a valued customer. Amazon and Genie both qualify.

FOLLOW-UP

I got the part as promised, and installation was easy. Success!
