Fails to function using HomeLink,
By I am not a novice when it comes to making home repairs and installation of new products. However, I felt the installation instructions were poorly written and could be simplified both in the narritive and with better drawings or photos. Furthermore, the installation kit provides a large amount of electrical wire (2 wire). If one used that wire, one would have to have two runs from the receiver to the motor and that creates an unsightly jumble of wires in the garage. I replaced that with a multi-wire cable, thus requiring only one run between the motor and receiver. One would think the Genie folks would provide the necessary multi-wire cable, but I supposed they saved a few cents by using the cheaper two-wire.

Peformed as advertised,
By The transmitter is made well and has an adequate range. Overall this product performs as advertised, I'd only recommend using your own copper.

Works Great, Poorly Made,

This review is from: Genie GIRUD-1T Universal Dual Frequency Radio Conversion Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought the Genie frequency conversion kit as a fix to the military frequency interference I was receiving from the nearby shipyard. My garage door was/is operating on the 390mhz frequency and much like the product description suggests, was operating intermittently and inconsistently. In order to open my door, I had to generally stand directly in front of the door and press the multiple times, and even then if I didn't have it just right, it may or may not have worked. After installing the Kit, I am now able to open my door from as much as 100ft away!!! I can even be in my kitchen and push the button, and walk out to my car (my garage is detached), and the door will be open and waiting. Why couldn't I give this five stars? Well, it is VERY poorly put together. The kit basically consists of a circuit board loosly sitting in a plastic mounting box. There are holes cut out of the box where the contact screws as well as the coding button on the circuit are supposed to be accessible. Because the circuit does not fit into the box snugly, the screws and coding buttons are not readily accesable through these holes, as the board moves around easily inside. To remedy this problem, I had to carefully hot glue the circuit board into place which took me 2 or 3 tries of gluing it in, realizing I messed up, scraping the old glue off, and regluing. Once I solved this problem, and set it up, it worked much better than I expected, but for the price (it can sell for as much as $100 on other sites), I would have expected to to be better made. Additional Note: The Kit hooks up to the same contacts to which wall switch hooks up. The Kit does not require you to disable your current frequency chip, so incidently, my old remotes will still work with the opener (albeit, with the same intermittent effects). In other words, my old remotes aren't totally useless, and can still be used in an emergency.

The day after I installed this due to military radio interference, there was an article in our local newspaper that you can just coil up some single strand speaker wire and connect it to the antenna on the receiver to strengthen your remote connection. I have known several who did this successfully. As far as the product, it was easy to install and works great.

I have an older home with a an older genie garage door opener, the dip switch kind, which can be "Lifted" by tech thieves. Security was a main issue but I also wanted to have the ability to use a smaller remote for coming and going from walks, runs and the likes. The older models won't work with Intellicode remotes. I was going to install a new system, which is cost preventative at this point and I found the Genie GIRUD-1T Universal Dual Frequency Radio Conversion Kit on Amazon. I ordered it after reading reviews and couldn't be happier with it. It arrived a few days earlier than expected, really great shipping. Packed very well, so no damage from shipping. I installed it using the enclosed instructions and took some digital photos of the original set up of wires for reference after removal and it was operational in less than an hour. The security that it provides is priceless. The mini remote is powerful, great range. I have used it for almost a month and not a single problem. I wish that all of life were like that for everyone. What a wonderful world it would be. It is rare to be so happy with service and product these days, so I thank all involved for a great product, great price and great service. Thanks and keep up the good work!

The product name really doesn't do this justice. Why not call it Garage Door Remote Upgrade kit?
This is what you need replace / update the remote on your garage door. It installs easily, sending the open / shut signal to your existing garage door through existing connection for the push button.

Workd Better Than New,

This review is from: Genie GIRUD-1T Universal Dual Frequency Radio Conversion Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
Used this on an older Genie overhead door opener that had a defective remote. On the old opener everything worked from the controls in the garage, but the remote was dead. Also the vintage of the remote was so old that it did not work with the Home Link system in the car visor. I ordered this Universal Dual Frequency Radio Conversion Kit, easily disconnected the original remote and connected this one. Now I have a working remote and the car's visor remote operates the door as well. The instructions are easily followed and mention to switch frequency on the remote key fob (simply slide a control selector) when initially programming the Home Link system in the car, otherwise everything worked fine using the default setup. The original system had a safety that required me to press the button twice to get the door to move down and the new remote maintains this safety. Funny thing is I contacted Genie for a replacement for the older remote unit and they said it was no longer available, they never suggested this Universal unit. I had accidentally run across a description of this on my own. Go figure!

Plug in power transformer.
Connect wire from transformer to control box. Connect wire from control box to garage door motor. Push button on control box. Push button on remote. Done. This really couldn't be any simpler. The provided remote is small enough that I can easily fit it in my jacket when I ride my motorcycle. The button on it is also large enough that I can find it and push it through the jacket while wearing motorcycle gloves. (It's a lot easier than trying to unzip the jacket pocket with gloves on.) The only thing I'd have liked would be to have a transformer that is fed from powerlines rather than a power socket. I had to put a socket in the garage just for this purpose.

The item is great. Easy to install and wire to the head unit. Instructions are very clear and diagrams help a lot. I installed it and programmed the control all under 30 min. Additionally, I programmed an extra genie remote control with intellicode that I had bought at a retail store and worked without problems. The only note that I have to make regarding the product is that when the item arrives the circuit board is loose inside the transmitter box. Other reviews have mentioned this before and even said that they fixed it with super glue, which I think is unnecessary. The circuit board is intended to sit on the four poles inside the transmitter box and then it is held with the two clips (located opposite to each other) that are on the two longest sides of the circuit board. This will do since the transmitter box won't be moving. I assume that the only reason it was loose at arrival is because of the handling of the box during shipment, which is expected.
