Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Genie Wireless Keypad #GWK-BL

Product Description

This looks like my keypad, but how do I know if it's the right one? 1. Frequency: Check the back of your remote or keypad to make sure the frequency is 390mhz (megahertz). 2. Dip Switches: Open the battery compartment on your old garage door remote or keypad and look to see how many dip switches (tiny switches in a row) it has. If your old remote has 9 or 12 dip switches, then it's a match for this keypad. If you don't have your old garage door remote, you can also look to see how many dip switches are on the back of your garage door opener (the overhead unit in your garage). The number of dip switches on the back of the opener is the same as on the remote or keypad.

2.0 out of 5 stars Genie Wireless Keypad, August 6, 2008

This review is from: Genie GWK-BL Wireless Keypad (Tools & Home Improvement)
The Genie Wireless Keypad was fairly simple to set up and install. Open it up and set your garage code based on your current garage door opener then install with 2 screws. The cover slides up and down and I think this is where this product fails. It worked really well for about a month. The up and down motion triggers a switch so you can enter your code. If you enter the code incorrectly you must close then reopen the cover. You also must make sure the red light comes on when you open. This is the problem we are now having. The red light doesn't come on because the cover isn't triggering the switch properly. We have to fiddle with it to get the light to come on so we can enter our code. Occasionally it just doesn't open when you enter the code. I think the newer ones with the hinged cover that lifts out and open probably work better, but we have an older garage door opener so had to go with this version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, September 27, 2007
Perfect for those "older" openers. Genies last forever. Just moved into an older home with a genie opener. Have long enjoyed the keyless convenience. Easy to program, easy to instal. Out of the box to mount was less than 30 minutes (some of which was just taking the cover off the opener to get the pin placement to determine the code).

Highy recommend as it adds a lot of convenience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Available at Home Depot or Lowes, July 28, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Genie GWK-BL Wireless Keypad (Tools & Home Improvement)
Like another reviewer, my family recently moved into an older house with a very old Genie garage door opener. We went to Home Depot and bought a key-pad similar to this one, and we even asked the sales assistant whether it would work with the model we had at home. "It's Universal," she said, "As long as you have a Genie it will work." Not the case. After a call to Genie it turns out that for their products made prior to a certain year (I think in the mid 90's) they require the older technology.

Sadly, Genie stopped manufacturing and supporting devices for these garage doors in roughly 2009, so you can no longer purchase them from your typical off-the-shelf brick and mortar store. The Genie customer service rep advised me to try a specialty shop or look online, which I did.

I was able to pick up the GWK-BL for about $35, with free shipping. It did the trick, and as mentioned by another reviewer setup was very fast indeed.

Tip: I used velcro on the back of mine because the area around the garage door is made of an adobe/brick substance that I didn't want to drill into. Two sided velco tape can be picked up at any hardware store for just a few bucks. This has the added benefit of allowing me to take it down if I ever need to at some point in the future.

Overall pleased with this product, and it provides a lot of convenience for keyless entry into the garage by multiple family members. 4 stars instead of 5 because the slide cover is a poor design, which Genie recognized and changed in newer models. Remember, the new "intellicode" openers won't work if you've got an ancient garage door so you're stuck with this one. :-)
