5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderful game!
Honestly speaking, this game really gave me a shock. At first I thought it is just another "Bejeweled" game with different theme and graphics (I did not say this kind of games are bad, some of them are really enjoyable too), but this game offered more than that.

I bought Puzzle Hero when it was a buck during a promotion on Amazon. That's a decent price for it, but I'd still much rather play Puzzle Quest, a far superior game of the same ilk which you can download for about the same price as this game right now. Honestly speaking, this game really gave me a shock. At first I thought it is just another "Bejeweled" game with different theme and graphics (I did not say this kind of games are bad, some of them are really enjoyable too), but this game offered more than that.

In this game, you will play a heroine who takes adventure in a beautiful world full of magic and legends to save her brother. You will fight various kinds of monsters, like minotaur, carnivorous flowers, titans, golems, wraith, which are classic characters from myths and tales very entertaining. The battle is in a bejeweled type board, you and monster play in turn to pair up 3 same items in line. 3 swords will launch an attack, 3 sacks will get the gold, etc. From each battle, you can gain experience to upgrade, collect gold to buy advanced equipment (armor, weapons, magic rings), or get enough manna to cast a powerful magic (though the types of magic are kind of few, only fire, ice and poisonous attack).

There is also an arena where you can train the heroine with all the monsters she had defeated, a good place to get upgraded indeed. The graphics are fantastic. The 3D characters are really funny, specially all the monsters' attack, defend and "being hit" movements are different and full of fun. The music is good and the game scenes are well designed too.

Like the puzzle quest, puzzle hero combines the bejeweled and RPG into one game, really really interesting and playable. If you want to find a casual game very relaxing and enjoyable, puzzle hero is definitely a good option. If you are a Bejeweled game lover, you should try this out. If you are a fun of puzzle quest, there is no reason for you to miss this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars My absolute f a v o r i t e indie title ever!, April 26, 2009

This is one fun game! It combines match-3 style puzzle game play with
classic Role-Playing Game elements (e.g.: turn-based combat, gold, experience points, armor, etc...) seamlessly. The music fits the medieval
fantasy setting quite nicely, I never found it grating or repetitive; the art is top notch, and I was particularly delighted with the monsters' designs.

I personally cannot recommend this title enough. Thank you, Genimo!

While the other posts basically say it all, I thought that I'd add that myself & dh (both 46) and our 9yo are addicted to this game. Generally I'm not a gamer, but do enjoy a good game of Bejeweled every now and then, and dh basically only plays Tumblebugs. He stumbled upon this one and dragged 9yo dd into it, 2 months after I had downloaded it. They're both hooked. Besides the obvious lining up of the same items, you must destroy the villians, which are pretty interesting to say the least. It's not just a mindless game; it involves strategic planning; you need to think about what you need to continue play and to advance to the next round. I don't want to get repetitive with the other posts, but this one is definitely a keeper.

I got this game for free on a daily game giveaway site. It is a wonderful game! I'm not into the bejeweled type games much, but this is totally different. I would absolutely pay $.99 for the download. You won't be disappointed in this game. I wish they'd come out with Puzzle Hero 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cutesy girlie puzzle quest, June 1, 2011

This game follows a very similar principle as the game Puzzle Quest: You embark on a sort of sword-and-sorcery role-playing adventure and battle against opponents using a puzzle board taking turns to make matches of three or more in a row. I've played demo versions of both Puzzle Quest and Puzzle Hero and finally settled on getting Puzzle Hero for my game collection mostly due to its "cuteness factor" and quick and easy learning curve. In comparison to the more complex Puzzle Quest, it is a simplified almost "childish" version and therefore seems better suited for younger players and less experienced gamers which matches the group of people I expect to be sharing game play with on my computer.

Your hero is a girl on a quest to rescue her little brother from an evil sorcerer. You can customize her looks somewhat but there is no option for a male hero to choose. Game play consists of beating up cute and whimsical monsters with a dress-up doll you can buy outfits, accessories and even a new hairdo for with gold that you earn during game play. You can either follow a strategy of maximizing your hero's attack and defense points, or try to get her the matching boots and gloves to complement her new and shiny armor. Overall, the game comes across as aimed mostly at young girls as the player target group. Boys may find it harder to identify with it, and the RPG crowd will likely prefer Puzzle Quest over it.

Fights are played out on a match-3 puzzle board, and match-making opportunities on the board are determined in part by luck but allow for some strategy to come into play as well. Monsters and attacks can be quite comical as they are played out by your character and the monster she is fighting against on the top of the screen. In the early stages, curiosity about what the next monster will look like and what funny quirks it might display during fights makes up much of the game's charm and fun. Over time, the same monsters appear again with just different names and coloring and start with a higher amount of health points making battles longer. At this point, the game becomes somewhat repetitive with few additional challenges at higher levels.

On a side note that has little to do with the game itself: I found the most challenging part about this game was trying to download it. I prefer to buy computer games on CDs, but unfortunately I could only find this as a download. After paying for it, I was surprised I first had to download and install a downloader software from Amazon before I could get the game. If I had known, I probably would have passed on it. I only wanted the game file, not some downloader software messing with my computer's registry. I started the download three times over because I couldn't find where the software had put the file on my computer. It created a "Amazon downloads" folder, but even after three tries there was nothing in there. I finally found the file in another location hidden away on my computer. After this experience, I will be even more selective in picking games that are sold on CD.

Really fun, a good twist on the standard bejeweled puzzles. Has plenty of replay value for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn-Based RPG Meets BeJeweled, November 5, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This is such a great, fun game! It took so many of my favorite elements from games and combined them. It is a turn based game in which you fight one monster per level, with a boss at the end of each journey, on your way to save the here's little brother. Instead of just matching colored jewels, you match swords to fight the monster, mana to use magic, potions to heal, money to buy gear inbeween levels, and experience to level up. It combines luck with tactic and really gives you one heck of a great game. I expected to be disappointed with another Amazon ".99" game but I would have paid full price for this one, its worth it!

I bought Puzzle Hero when it was a buck during a promotion on Amazon. That's a decent price for it, but I'd still much rather play Puzzle Quest, a far superior game of the same ilk which you can download for about the same price as this game right now. Both games have Bejeweled style game play with RPG elements mixed in, though Quest has a story to follow with lots of dialogue, more magic/skills, better graphics, and better sound. I will admit this game does seem to be made for younger kids, so if you're a parent looking for a tamer cutesy option, this would be fine. Even if it gets marked down again, I would still recommend Puzzle Quest over this low budget imitator.
