This mouse is very comfortable and configurable and works great in Windows 8. The surfaces vary from position to position: thumb is the most grippy with a rubber-like texture, the fingers are non-slippery plastic and the palm and right side are slipper plastic. This seems well thought out. I have medium size hands and this mouse fits very well. The X-Y buttons near the forefinger are easy to access and have a raised ridge. The two windows buttons by the thumb thumb are easy to access but would be a little easier if they weren't raised so high. The DPI setting works well and is located in a place where you aren't likely to hit it by accident. The Macro button is in a odd location but is still serviceable. The software is awesome and the LED color customization is amazing. You can completely customize the color, throb rate and intensity. You can adjust the weight with tiny weight inserts. The overall design is really angular.

Pros:

Lots of buttons
Comfortable
Awesome Software
Cool LED customization
Fast DPI
Neat textures
Software works on Windows 8

Cons:

Thumb buttons raised a little high (can get used to)
Opening the weight compartment isn't intuitive (press on scorpion tail and slide right)
May be small for large hands or long fingered gamers.

UPDATE: Looks like Genius has a newer driver on the Genius site than the GX site. [...]

I'm a gaming mouse guru, and have been trying to find the perfect mouse for my needs. I'm looking for about 9 total buttons, in a setup where the buttons aren't all squished together (like the Razer Naga), and in a form factor that I find comfortable (see my Logitech G700 review). So, while digging deep for the "perfect mouse," I stumbled upon the Genius Deathtaker. It looked like it had it all - 9 buttons spread all around the mouse, a design similar to my G9 that I love, and the ability to reprogram all of the buttons to whatever key I'd like. And while the mouse does deliver on those key points, it falls short in overall build quality.

The thumb rest area has a nice, soft-touch texture (sort of like the back of Droid phones), but Genius didn't extend this design around the whole mouse - the rest is hard plastic. That's not so bad, but it does feel a bit "cheap" in the hand. More of an issue is that most of the buttons are very mushy, and have very poor action. The X and Y buttons near the left click are particularly bad in this regard. The X button will press down a good halfway before it reaches the "click," and then it will sort of "stick" slightly before coming up when you release. The Y button on my mouse slides back and forth slightly when you slide your finger across it.

The left/right click, D and M buttons have somewhat better feel, but all of the "auxiliary" (X, Y, D and M) buttons also have no contouring or other tactile cues as to where they are. Over time, you might gain a better feel for where each button is on the mouse, but it would have been nice to have slight bumps or changes in leveling to let you know, without looking, that your finger has moved over a different button.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Let me start by saying that I am a fan of my Logitech G400, and its predecessor the MX518. The DeathTaker feels completely different in my hand (shorter and wider), which while not a bad thing, definitely took some getting used to (this is by no means a negative for the DeathTaker, merely an observation).

The DeathTaker is very lightweight empty (almost a cheap plastic feeling) and I found I had to put six of the eight weights into the cartridge to approximate the feel of my G400. The braided cord and the gold USB connectors are nice touches, although I find the cord a tad on the short side. Luckily I can plug it into my keyboard; there is no way it would reach the back of my PC. I love that I can change the led light to the color of my choice and the way it glows (steady glow, slow-med-fast pulse). The buttons are completely programmable via the included software, and the macro feature is serviceable... although I personally prefer using keyboard macros over mouse macros because I just find it easier (I am a MMO gamer). It has two huge skid feet on the bottom that really make it slide.

The biggest issue I have with the DeathTaker is the buttons themselves. The left mouse button just doesn't double-click real well, even after I've played with the sensitivity setting. I can't get it to feel right to me. I also don't like the tactile feel of the mouse wheel click; it just seems too stiff for my personal taste. The other buttons are hard to reach, too. I find myself constantly having to look down at the mouse to see what I am pressing. They are not intuitively placed for me. The thumb buttons are actually positioned backwards from where my thumb rests, versus under or above my thumb.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The Genuis GX is the first gaming mouse I have owned. I am not a hard core gamer, but this mouse satisfies my needs for playing games like the Sims and for using Windows. The mouse drivers are more robust than any other mouse I have used. I had to do some research to figure out what the different settings meant. I was able to customize this mouse exactly how I wanted it. The mouse works right out of the box and the extra drivers aren't necessary to install, but to get the most out of the mouse, installing the drivers is essential.

The built quality of this mouse is fair. The cord is great, but the mouse body doesn't feel as sturdy as I would like. The extra weights are great. They were easy to install and I used all of them. The mouse feels nice in my hand and the buttons are accessible.

Overall, I like the mouse and think it's a good option for those who need a decent all around mouse that can do double duty as a gaming mouse.
