Great biographical coverage and gorgeous artwork.

Genius illustrated is the second in a series of 3 books on the life and illustration work of Alex Toth, the quintessential comic artists comics artist.
Chuck Arnold
If the first volume of this trilogy on Alex Toth's life and works was excellent, this second one buries it.

This book should be a must read and part of the collection of books by all artists in the animation field. I have been working in animation for 45 years and I can remember the storyboards the Toth did on Super Friends. I thought the boards were far better then the actual finished show.

If the first volume of this trilogy on Alex Toth's life and works was excellent, this second one buries it. The biography is fascinating but the artwork part is absolutely packed with prime Toth material. If you are at all interested in Alex Toth, this is an absolute must.

Superb follow up to Genius Isolated. A critical but sympathetic biography with stunning samples of artwork both well known & unknown. The series sets the bar for biographies for comic boo masters..

This is a masterful, comprehensive work and Alex Toth was a graphic arts storytelling genius. Great biographical coverage and gorgeous artwork. He had few true peers in his chosen field and was among my own favorite comics illustrators in the so-called "silver age" of comics, right up there with Russ Heath, John Severin, Gil Kane, Joe Kubert, Wally Wood, and George Evans.
Included in this volume are numerous presentation drawings for sold and unsold Hanna-Barbera t.v. cartoon pilots; the Herculoids, Space Ghost, Jonny Quest, et al., as well as strip work for DC and other comics publications. Two of Toth's classic DC war stories are included as well; "White Devil, Yellow Devil", an excellent World War Two character study of two adversaries facing life, death, and each other in a war that neither one of them ever made, and "Burma Sky", a tremendous "Flying Tigers" yarn that revolves around the kind of seat-of-the-pants combat flying that Toth adored. Surprisingly, there is a technical error here that Toth, the perfectionist, would have had a fit over if he'd caught it (and I can't discover that he ever did...though I can't fathom why not). "Burma Sky" depicts the Flying Tigers in their original incarnation as the American Volunteer Group (the AVG) of the Nationalist Chinese Air Force, before they were absorbed into the US Army Air Corps in mid-1942. As AVG the Curtiss P-40 pursuit fighters they flew carried the markings of the Chinese Air Force, but Toth depicts them here with anachronistic U.S. forces wing and fuselage insignia. Not like him at all, but this doesn't impede the flow of this story one iota. Iconic work. This is the second volume of a three volume set on his life and work and is a lavishly...and exquisitely...produced gem of a publication. Most highly recommended.

Terrific read for Toth followers. This book and its companion volume(s) provide an exhaustive look at the life and work of one of the greatest, if not most famous, designer and illustrators in comics history.

Whew!! I tried to order this book in June 2012 and after many delay dates I finally get it 9 months later after Barnes and Noble was able to order it on March 1 in 2013 and I get it at their store on March 6 the following week! I thought I would be getting it at the same reduced price as I saw on Barnes and Noble .com. But I had to pay the full price reduced by just $5.00 in the store! Oh well, I figure I'll order Genius Animated on either Barnes and Noble.com or Amazon.com to get a lower reduced price! Anyway this book packs a lot of past history on Alex Toth's experiences in the animation field, comic book field and in his relationship with his marriages and children!

If you get the SPACE GHOST AND DINO BOY dvd set from Warner Home Video you can watch SIMPLICITY: THE LIFE AND ART OF ALEX TOTH. GENIUS ISOLATED and GENIUS ILLUSTRATED are a very expanded version of that 1 hour and 15 min documentary! This book has a great selection of comic page examples of Mr. Toth's work that demonstrate his skill at telling a story visually in clear drawings without excessive detail! Whether it's the clear comic book cover of a version of DRAGNET tv show or the fantasy on a pacific island called BOY ON THE PACIFIC, Mr. Toth illustrates all the action with clarity and great facial close ups that make us feel the thoughts and feelings of the characters!

I also enjoyed Toth's rendition of a TWILIGHT ZONE story in a comic book based on Rod Serling's TWILIGHT ZONE series! Toth was the right man to depict the facial nuances of the characters in THE CAPTIVE when an arrogant store manager,Mr. Gruber, has bullied his female employees in the toy department. Mr. Gruber suddenly found himself confronted by Billy the Kidd and Wild Bill Hickcock from the old west and they decided to teach him some manners!
