4.0 out of 5 stars 6 watts sounds like 16
I "field tested" this last summer in Albania under some pretty difficult conditions (no electricity). For a small unit, it delivers good sound. You'll never get great bass from a unit of this size, but amazingly you can get quite a bit of bottom end and room-filling volume. 3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay, not as good as expected from reading other reviews
It's small, cute, seems made well enough. Not very loud or clear in my opinion, but it's better than some cheap tape players and stereos I've had in the past. It's not a music machine, but if you want something to keep you company in the kitchen or garden and hook-up to your mp3 via input cable, this will work.

You'll never get great bass from a unit of this size, but amazingly you can get quite a bit of bottom end and room-filling volume. Used with my iPod, I was very impressed with the output and it filled a classroom with music. It was essential that the students hear English lyrics clearly and the Genius delivered in this area also. It can run on batteries or AC and I was impressed that my rechargable batteries lasted all week. A friend heard this unit and had to have one!

I purchased these speakers to hook up to a SanDisk Sansa e280. The result is great! Set up is easy. Plug in the a/c adapter to the speakers and the wall outlet, connect your mp3 player to the speakers with the included 3.5mm cord, press the on/off button and adjust the volume to your taste. There you have it... great sound made simple and easy.
If you want to take the speakers to the great outdoors, just bring along some AAA batteries and you're good to go. Since I have't used it under battery power, I can't tell you how long the batteries will last.
If you are looking for big box stereo sound from a $20+ portable speaker, you are going to be disappointed. If you are looking for relatively inexpensive, portable speakers for your mp3 player that give you good sound, you will want to click the little orange Add to Cart button up there on the right. You see it. Go ahead.. click it.

Update- 3/5/09- The unit takes 4 AAA batteries. I put some in to test it out and see how long they will last. I've got to tell you, I'm sufficiently impressed. I'm using regular Rayovac AAA's and the player is a fully charged 2GB Sansa Clip. The first day I ran it on battery power only it was on for 8 hours continuously and didn't miss a beat, so to speak. I just started the second day on the same batteries and it looks like they may outlast the Sansa Clip (started at half charge).
In short, if you are looking for a good set of portable speakers at a reasonable price, this is the unit you want. You know where the orange button is.. go on.. do it. You know you want to.

I just wanted something that I could plug my iPod Shuffle into so
I could listen to music while working in the garage. Don't like
being attached to those earphones all the time.
Anyway, for the money, this little box can't be beat in my opinion.
Runs on AC or battery. Does just what it says it does.
Comes with a small pouch and the audio cable to connect directly
to the iPod.

These speakers work surprisingly well. They were loud enough (with no distortion) that I had to ask my son to turn it down. He just has a cheap Mp3 player and the system is perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, great little speakers, February 17, 2009
This review is from: Genius SP-i200 Portable Speakers for MP3 Players (Black) (Electronics)
I bought these for my off-brand mp3 player that I normally have a hard time finding accessories for. I love them. They're portable, don't use up batteries very quickly, and also come with a wall jack for use at home. Great sound, not tinny at all. I was pleasantly surprised. And for the price, you really can't find better speakers.

Like the others have said, this is a lightweight, no frills, mp3 baby-boom box. It will distort if you are trying to get music to travel farther than a medium sized room, but if the player has EQ settings you can minimize that. Not much bass response, as expected, but more than adequate tone quality at moderate volumes. Perfect for audiobooks and podcasts, good for music, and a real bargain for this level of portability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted...and more, May 26, 2009

This review is from: Genius SP-i200 Portable Speakers for MP3 Players (Black) (Electronics)
I've been searching for the perfect speakers for my needs, and these are perfect, and then some more: Enough power (watts) to drive the speakers, decent fidelity for portable speakers, easily portable to play from my MP3 player, and suitable to play from my laptop which has underpowered speakers.

And why is it better than I need? Because the speakers can be powered by both an AC adapter or batteries, and the AC adapter is provided. USB-powered speakers don't provide the volume and fidelity that I want, so I figured I'd have to get battery-powered or AC-adapter-powered speaker. That this speaker provides both is uncommonly rare.

I had concern before buying the speakers that there wouldn't be enough stereo separation between the two speakers, but that's not the case. The center point of the speakers is 5 inches apart, and the speakers do a fine job of stereo separation.

If I could have one improvement, it would more boost of the higher frequencies. Directly in front of the speakers, the highs are clear but not to the side or other parts of a room. The overall fidelity is very good; most of my listening preference is to vocals-based music.

This MP3 player speaker works very well. Since I don't use ear phones it is very convenient to plug in and listen.
