From the Manufacturer

Genius introduces the Pen Mouse, which gives you a brand new experience on cursor control for better handling and more comfort than a regular mouse. Pen Mouse is powered by 1200 dpi tracking technology and is switchable between 400 and 800 dpi. You can tilt it up to 85 degrees to provide a non-compromising surface advantage. It's ideal for presentations and for any time you need finer, more natural-feeling mouse control.

Plus with 2.4GHz technology, Pen Mouse gives you an efficient performance with reliable working smoothness at all times. For power saving, a smart auto-detection is added to put Pen Mouse into sleep mode when no action has been detected. Just press any button to start using it again. And the Flying scroll feature is the easiest way to fast web and document scrolling. Another advanced feature includes a plug-and-forget Pico receiver to prevent breakage when using a laptop or desktop. A travel case is included for protection.

2.4GHz Wireless Technology

The Pen Mouse's power-saving anti-interference Pico Receiver offers a plug-and-forget experience. The USB wireless receiver is tiny and low-profile to stay out of the way in your working environment.

Adjustable Optical Sensor

The high-resolution 1200 dpi sensor engine gives precise, accurate tracking for ease of use. The performance-enhanced optical engine works on almost any surface. The sensor engine is adjustable to 400/800 dpi for lower speed cursor movement when needed, so you can customize the Pen Mouse to your mousing style. The tracking is accurate enough to work on multiple surfaces for mousing versatility and mobility--it will even work on the palm of your hand.

This pen mouse works real well.
jChaz
Lift the pen to far above the mousing surface and the cursor erratically leaps around.
Adam Holder
The "Right Click" button is down on the pen too far.

I thought this was almost just the thing I was looking for: A pen format mouse without the need for a cumbersome tablet.

It works well out of the box without installation of software. However, if you want to have pen mouse sensitivity different than your regular mouse, you'll need to install the driver software. With the driver software you can change between 400, 800 and 1200 DPI. (That's the only real functionality you get with the software, which in Windows 7 installs a 6.5 MB footprint at C:\Genius, and shows up in Add/Remove programs as PenMouse with publisher as 'KYE'.)

With the Windows 7 tablet drivers this pen can somewhat be used for handwriting recognition too; HOWEVER, it' not practical: Every time you set the pen down you need to click and hold for a few milliseconds then you can write a character. Every time you lift the tip you need to click and wait. Sadly an unexpectedly, I can write much easier and faster with my regular optical mouse. I tried a number of settings changes and could not figure out a way to improve the situation. Perhaps there are 3rd-party tablet drivers that would make handwriting work properly.

As a pen-format mouse to be used only as a mouse, this is a five-star product.

As a drawing pen, this is a three-star product (Works fine, but it's a bit quirky, particularly given the delay before drawing can begin).

As a writing pen, this is a no-star product (I'd love to hear if you have ideas on drivers that could make this work practically).

Update 01/29/2013:

I have now used this product for greater than 6 months and I am quite satisfied with the returns on investment. I have not had any strain-related pain after starting to use this product. As a tip to buyers, I would recommend you to get a pack of AAA alkaline batteries when you buy this mouse. I use this product for at least 6 hours a day every day and a single battery lasts little over a month. With a pack of batteries, you shouldn't bothered for a few months at the least.

------------------------------------------------
This product is an example of a great idea with weak implementation. I base this review on usage as a mouse, not for drawing and other pen-input activities.

Good things first.

1. Nice feel when held. Not top heavy and comfortable to hold.Ergonomic.
2. Accurate function, even without any drivers installed.
3. Simple to use. Just plug in the receiver and you are good to go.
4. Selecting texts is precise (after a few tweaks for me. See below).

Not so good things.

1. For left click, you have to press the pen down since the button is at the tip. After some time of use, my hand became stiff due to constantly applying pressure.

2. Plasticky feel. Drop it on a hard floor and the thing will shatter into pieces.

3. The pen holder (pocket clip) is at the wrong location, interfering with using the mouse.

Some tips.

1. Remove the pen holder (pocket clip). The mouse feels a whole lot comfortable after that. To do this, open the battery cover and use a precision star screwdriver to remove the screw holding the pen-holder. As simple as that.

2. Enable Clicklock in Mouse settings.

I saw this product while attending a trade show and decided to buy one to test it out.
The pen style design made the product lot easier to carry compare to a ordinary mouse. The 2.4GHz wireless feature allow me to use this pen mouse in a decent distance. I can walk around the conference room and do my presentation with this pen without losing connection.
It also works perfectly for signing digital documents.
Now I carry it with me in the leather pouch which comes with the package.
Perfect tool for presentation, business trip, or simply replace your old mouse to get maximum wrist comfort.

Ok, I got the Genius Pen Mouse confused with another mouse pen and ended up getting the wrong one. Don't get me wrong, as soon as I got it, I relized my mistake and wasn't overly unsatisfied. It fits the hand, it isn't too cumbersome and I was getting pretty excited to try it out with photoshop. I plugged it in and realized that pressing the tip down activated the left click button.

That didn't do at all. I don't know who designs this stuff, but anyone who draws knows that you don't use that much pressure to draw with. You can't. The more pressure, the less control, but hey, if I was going to sell something computery, I would at least give you the options to change the buttons around. Modifying the button functions would make this mouse pen really functional, ESPECIALLY with the tip of the pen being a button. I was having ideas and my creative juices were flowing; I'll just load the software up and...

Nope. The software that it comes with doesn't support that ability. Ok, I'll read the directions. Nope, not there either. I cursed mildly before deciding to visit the company website. Looking around, I found that no one else had wondered if they could change the mouse functions either. I sent them an email.

Now to fully appreciate this story, you have to realize that I hate customer service representatives. I hate them because their title implies some sort of service which is seldom the case. In truth, I regard customer service departments the lowest of the low and I find that the higher the quality of the product, or the greater functionality, the worse the service will be. With a name like 'Genius,' I was expecting an endless back and forth trying to get my point across and wishing death on the lot of them, like AT&T, DELL and a few others.
