Understanding relationship patterns in your family,
By "minuet1965" (Kailua, HI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Genograms: Assessment and Intervention (Paperback)
This book came not only highly recommended by my counselor but from my graduate school as well so you know this is a good book for someone getting into the field. I also think this book could be helpful because it is written in layman's terms but it depends on what you are looking to gain out of the book. This book looks at repetitive patterns that happen over the multigenerational transmission process. Patterns that seem to repeat themselves over time and are passed on. Why they happen, what to look for and what questions to ask. Genograms can be extremely revealing even if all you have are only facts. Correlations and assumptions can be made and drawn upon. I'd recommend this book to psychology type students and maybe individuals in the therapy process.

Great tool for a wide range of clients.,

This was an assigned book in my graduate program. I thought it was a nice tool but way too time intensive for the majority of work I do. I have found that it is a wonderful tool for working with people who have an organic impairment or concrete thinking paterns. I have drawn the geno-gram on a white board during the first few sessions with the client. It helps me get a clearer history from the client and gives them a visual, which can be helpful in processing information.

A Map for Counseling,
This review is from: Genograms: Assessment and Intervention (Paperback)
If you're a Marriage and Family Therapist, or a counselor or psychologist this book will help you. It teaches you how to map out families and family patterns. It helps you to understand the family connection to your client's problems. Your client will also gain a better understanding of themselves and their family during the process of mapping. This book is a great tool.

Clearly illustrates the value of genograms in counseling,

This review is from: Genograms: Assessment and Intervention (Paperback)
This book was used to teach genograms in a masters class I took in family and couples counseling. It is very thorough (maybe too much so, as sometimes I thought "okay, I get it, I get it"). The information is well presented, and the authors tried to make it more interesting by using the family histories of famous and historical figures. Most important, the value of the genogram is well explained. I will keep this book for future reference.

This review is from: Genograms: Assessment and Intervention (Paperback)
If you're not familiar with Genograms you will after you read this book. It tells you how to use this book for your family sessions and by using genograms as an therapeutic technique. It I recommend you buy a genogram software so it can help you do what. It doesn't come with a CD. Which is the down side of this book you will have to pay extra money for that.I used this book for my Marriage and Family System Class.

This review is from: Genograms: Assessment and Intervention (Paperback)
I create genograms as part of my job in private social service work. I thought this book would be a good backup for previous training, but it does not serve that purpose. However, it does give me clarity on how the genograms that I build have ultimate use by counselors and child protection workers. And the birth-order information is a fascinating read.

lack of communicaton,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Genograms: Assessment and Intervention (Paperback)
This supplier is unrealiable. I ordered a book on 18th January and after that just saw not shipped and Amazon remarks that the order cannot be cancelled. I wrote them to cancel and still did not give reply. Then I finally gave up and decided to order thru Barnes and Nobel and got free three days delivery. It is now February 6th and I have never heard anything and
still have the order open and unable to cancel on Amazon which is unfair. Anyhow it better not be shipped since I will ask my credit card to refuse payment. Very very bad lack of freeback and delivery.
