Book Description

May 22, 2012 Genshiken Omnibus (Book 1)
TO THINE OWN OTAKU BE TRUE

It’s spring of freshman year, and Kanji Sasahara has a difficult dilemma. Should he declare his love for manga and anime fandom by  joining an otaku club, like he has always wanted to? Is he prepared to deal with the social stigma attached to being an otaku? Meanwhile, Saki Kasakabe has her own otaku conundrum. How can she turn her boyfriend, anime fanboy Makoto, into a normal guy? Kanji follow his heart as does Saki. When both Kanji and Makoto join Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Saki chases Makoto through the various activities of the club from costume-playing and comic conventions, to video gaming and anime model figures. Saki finds otaku to be more than she imagined, but not necessarily in a good way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good collected edition November 7, 2012

This omnibus contains the first three books in the Genshiken series of manga, a comedic slice-of-life series concerning a group of otaku in college.

Although thick, this book holds itself together well enough. Single volumes may be more comfortable to read in some cases, but buying the three volumes included would end up being more expensive in most cases, and this collected edition is built well enough that one can read it without taking any special care to the condition of the book.

If you're up on Japanese otaku culture, and know what otaku means, you'll probably like this manga. It's a slice-of-life style story that details the protagonist's journey into the world of otaku via the Genshiken club as he moves throughout his years in college. The characters are fresh with diverse personalities and the art is excellent. The translation *seems* accurate and the English flows smoothly. Also, there are nice translation notes to help with some of the cultural differences. The binding is solid and it's easy to read this large omnibus.

I can't wait for more. One of my favorite manga series!

Lastly, this manga inspired an anime. There are two seasons published by Anime Works/Media Blasters. They are slow paced, but faithful and endearing.
