Update Oct 19 2013:
The original version of this volume had bad formatting. It has finally been corrected and now is readable. So I've updated my review to let potential customers that they can safely purchase this kindle book and not be disappointed in their reading experience do to product defects. As for the actual story, your experience may vary, but I enjoyed it.

Original comment (1star)
This is a comment on the formatting for the Genshiken Second Season vol 3 manga as viewed with a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 device.
After downloading and opening the volume, the edges of the pages are cut off with some of the text bubbles cut off along with the text. Obviously reading the manga gets to be impossible. As for the story itself, I've watched the anime online and find it enjoyable. That's why it bothers me enough to warn other potential customers of this volume to be aware that its got problems. The 1st and 3rd volumes are okay, just this one has issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars And the wait begins for issue 3 March 25, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I can't say enough about the excellence of this manga. It is both funny and poignant and I really don't want to wait six months for the next installment!

I don't want to go against the other reviewers, but the second season is in no way a reboot (one of those overused "cool" words for anything from starting a pc to changing your shoes) of the series. It is a direct continuation, hence the chapter numbering, with a new crop of club members whose tastes in popular culture are different than the first seasons.

Once again, if you are new to Genshiken, you should look at the first series since it will help you better understand what is going on; especially with returning "cast" members. There are omnibus editions out that will let you do so on a budget.Genshiken Omnibus 1: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture I also recommend the video series as well. I found it pretty complementary to the manga. There is a complete set available for that as well which includes the ovas that were originally made with the Kuji-Un series.Genshiken DX: TV Series One & OVA Collection

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Boat! March 23, 2013
By Tim
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The second volume of the Genshiken reboot follows the previous one not just in story, but in both my praise and complaints. The references to new anime creates something of a continuity error from the original time line, but it keeps in the spirit of the original and most of the jokes are so funny that I don't care (it may have been my sleep deprived mind, but reading the "Nice boat!" line at 4AM was hilarious).

We get to learn more about the newer characters in this volume, all are better developed than they were before, so this is the volume that will probably let you decided if you like the new cast (I personally miss the old characters, but their cameos make up for the lack of some of them).

Translation is great, and the index in the back is practically necessary for any reader. While I got a good portion of the jokes without it, Genshiken has always thrived on Anime in-jokes. If you were already a fan of the series, this should make you happy knowing that some things don't change.

All in all, I am completely satisfied with this second volume. While I miss the old cast, the new characters are interesting, and they take the series in a fun new direction while still being true to the original. Highly recommended.

As with all series like this, make sure you read the previous volumes before this one... including the original Genshiken series. While the reboot is pretty good in explaining things, I imagine it wouldn't be near as enjoyable without knowledge of what came before.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Was Good! January 2, 2014
I'm plugging along at a good pace with these books and so far they aren't disappointing me one bit!

So the members of Genshiken return to a place where they are truly in their element, COMICFEST!!! They all get together and head to the summer comicfest to get all the comics they want and cosplay until they can't cosplay anymore! :-)

The story also shows the return of the character, Angela, from America. It was cool to see her again, but she has a hidden agenda in this issue. She is trying to hook up with Madarame, but Hato and Sue manage to thwart her plans and show her what she is doing is wrong.

We also get to see more into the psyche of Hato and find out more about why he cross-dresses and why he loves that lifestyle.

All in all it was a great issue and it showed the return of some of my favorite characters such as Tanaka and Madarame, Any fan of Genshiken will love this issue! Check it out!
