OGIUE DENIES HER OTAKUNESS, September 22, 2006
This review is from: Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture, Volume 6 (Paperback)
Ogiue is still the odd one out in the Genshiken club. Even Saki-san fits in better than her. It probably has to do with the fact that even though Ogiue is as much an otaku as the others, for some reason she hates to admit the fact to herself, and thereby transfers this anger to the Genshiken. But Ohno has an anger inside her too, or more a burning passion to make Ogiue admit to herself that she's just as much a nut as her. Gaining Saki's help, she sets about inducting her into cosplay for the school festival! Behind the other's back, Ogiue is even drawing and writing her own doujinshi for the next ComicFest, but the subject matter is a lot Yaoi, and stars Madarame and Sasahara! Speaking of Madarame, he's having a bit of trouble finding a job before he graduates and it makes you wonder how hard he's really trying and whether he really wants to leave his college life behind.
Genshiken Volume 6 was another excellent entry in this great series focusing on manga and anime fans in Japan. The newest character, Ogiue, was centerstage here, and it really helped you get to know and like her. I'm still intrigued as to why she wants to hide the fact that she's otaku, lying to herself about what she really loves. Even so, this personality flaw of hers leads to some great comedy bits and makes her the perfect foil for Saki, whose own affection for Genshiken has changed her attitude, at least a bit, towards otakudom. One of the more charming chapters in this book focuses on a day that Madarame and Saki spend together just hanging out and maybe hints at a would-be romance...at least on Madarame's side. Excellent manga.

Genshiken

DelRey Manga
"Genshiken: The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture" is a "Slice of Life" manga series, later turned into an anime, that revolves around a Japanese college club or circle. A hand full of different geeks get together and become a tight knit friends; talking about anime, manga, video games, cosplay, etc. The story follows them along their experience through college and into the job market.
If you yourself are a geek, weather it be manga/anime/gundum model/cosplay/video games...whatever, you should give this series a try. Geeks can relate to at least one of the characters and know someone else who is like the other characters. Most geeks will also associate with the situations the characters are going through. As a side note, each issue has tributes to other anime & manga (by way of quotes, theme songs, pictures, cosplays); can you guess what series' they are talking about (they don't actually use the names for copyright reasons)?
Genshiken: Volume 6.
I wont bore you with the inner details of vol. 6, if you've not read the first five, you wont get it. However I will say:
It continues the story of this "Slice of Life" series. With the addition of the new member, Ogiue-san to the Genshiken club, things are starting to flow a bit differently then in the first five. Older members are getting jobs while the club try's to attract other new members. I think it's at this point that the series is turning from a comedy to more of a dramatic feel.
I'm totally addicted to this series and will be sad, very soon as it only goes to 9 volumes.
