This is a great family movie with excellent actors and a good, clean storyline. Breath taking scenery as well - I recommend it highly for both children and adults.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, but doesn't follow the book, February 28, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gentle Ben: The Movie (DVD)
If I had never read or heard of the book by Walt Morey, I would say it was a really good movie. But knowing it is based on the book...and I read it...I would say the movie didn't follow the book accurately at all.

There are some good things about it. The actors are great, the plot is interesting and the scenery is nice. It is a good movie for ages 5 and up. There are some scary parts for under five, such as a brief moment were poachers and rangers draw guns, and Mark, the boy, falls into a pit were the bear is trapped. There are no swearwords or rough fights in this movie.

This movie has little in common with the book. It is supposedly based on the book Gentle Ben, but the movie has nothing in common except the bear, the boy, and Fog Benson. (The book setting is Alaska, not Oregon; there is no uncle involved; Fog keeps Ben all along; Ben was named after a squeaky old man named Ben; Mark is weak, pale and might suffer tuberculosis; Mark has lived in the Alaskan village all his life; his father is a fisherman, not a doctor who works for Doctors Without Borders; and Ben is a grizzly, not a black bear.) If you were expecting the movie to be based on the book, don't get it. If you have no idea about the book, or do not expect the movie to be the

Gentle Ben is a story I really enjoy! There is a very sensitive side to it, a plot, and a good outcome. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who is an animal lover, likes beautiful scenery, and enjoyes a good-hearted movie.
