Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This beautifully illustrated book serves two purposes: It traces 500 years of botanical exploration of the United States by both Europeans and Americans, and it provides an opportunity to see and enjoy over 100 of the botanical illustrations in the collections of the Library of Congress. Nearly 200 naturalists and botanists are mentioned in the text and index. However, no index of the plants discovered is included. Nor is there an index of the artists or complete citations for the lavish illustrations' sources. Still, this book fills a gap for the interested generalist and is one of a nice, readable series. The publisher, who had discovered a major theft of materials at the Library of Congress while working on this book, will publish separately a list of illustration source citations, available upon request.--Ed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collector's quality, interesting botanical history., August 11, 1997

This review is from: Gentle Conquest: The Botanical Discovery of North America (Library of Congress Classics) (Hardcover)
A beautiful book - mechanically, textually, and artistically. In describing details of botanical discovery since Linnaeus, it makes interesting and alive what could easily be dry subject matter. The text touches on European intellectual history, and some American history in the process. It's filled with magnificently printed historical color illustrations of plants from the Library of Congress collection. Printed on heavy paper, very nicely bound, quality dust jacket, bookmark ribbon woven to the spine - a real collector's item
