Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Like Iris Dement on a day trip to the dark side, Georgia singer Paula Fraser delivers a seductively Gothic take on country folk Americana. The blend of steel guitar, Fraser's lonesome soprano, and an empty-barroom ambience sends shivers through "The Well," "Game of Broken Hearts," and "Lonely Lights." The circle is indeed unbroken when a sound this traditional is viewed as hip and happening. --Jeff Bateman

5.0 out of 5 stars a nearly-lost modern classic, October 6, 2004
Why isn't this album more popular, especially with the rising popularity of 'Alt Country' among hipsters and others who wouldn't be typically thought of as country music fans?

I haven't figured it out.

The superb rating on allmusic.com isn't misleading -- this is a beautiful album, and any fan of Patsy Cline, The Flatlanders, and the haunting, bittersweet sadness that only great country music can inspire will love it to death. Paula Frazer's voice is earnest; it resonates real heartache without sounding melodramatic or overwrought.

Hopefully, this isn't an album to be lost forever. Like The Flatlander's debut, it might just resurface to surprise an entire new generation of country music fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars this is pretty decent i guess., May 25, 1998

this is kind of what I wish country music sounded more like. It has hank williams like lyrics with a girl singer, who is really good at singing. She has a strong voice that some might say is haunting or something. I dont think that I would be compromising my immense credibility if i said that this is a quality work. Ok then.
