Product Description

This is the only DVD for beginning hand drummers - especially adult beginners - who want to experience the joys of playing djembe while going easy on their hands. It was created by Alan Dworsky, the best-selling author of How to Play Djembe and two-time winner of DRUM Magazine's readers' poll for Best Percussion Method Book. Each of the seven step-by-step lessons on the video starts like a private lesson and ends with Alan's entire class playing the rhythm, so you also get a sense of what it's like to play in a group. Proper playing technique is covered in depth and African rhythms are adapted to a Gentle Djembe style, so that you can play safely and comfortably no matter what your age. And each lesson has a matching play-along track, making the DVD a complete learning tool. Shot in gorgeous wide-screen format and endorsed by Arthur Hull as the most non-intimidating way for beginning beginners to get started.

About the Actor

Alan Dworsky is the author of several bestselling books for hand drummers, including A Rhythmic Vocabulary and Conga Drumming - both of which won the DRUM Magazine Readers Poll for Best Instructional Book - as well as How to Play Djembe and Hip Grooves for Hand Drums.  His videos include Bongo Grooves for Beginners, Gentle Djembe for Beginners, Cajon Grooves for Beginners, Left-Handed Guitar for Beginners, and Cup Drumming for Kids.

For those who are older, those with arthritis, playing the drum with one fewer position may make playing the drum possible. This product is marketed for those who need a gentle approach, and it works well, omitting the slap. Play-along sections are wonderful. INEXPENSIVE- I would have to drive 15 miles one way to pay $60 per hourly private lesson with an advertised djembe teacher in my area. I paid $40 plus shipping for the first 2 volumes, and I have had hours of practice on as many patterns as my brain can absorb as a novice. All 3 volumes cost less than one single hour private lesson with no car & no gas involved. INEXPENSIVE. 6 and a half min of sales you can skip vs 51 and a half min of lessons and playalongs.

I bought this, along with a mid-priced rope tuned djembe, for my husband for our anniversary. He has no musical background, but wanted to be able to drum along while I play acoustic guitar.

This DVD is broken down into chapters that each focus on one pattern. The patterns start very, very basic, and progress into more fun and faster rhythms. You learn the pattern and then play along with the group at his hippie djembe retreat and you can almost smell the patchouli. :)

The instructor is likeable, and he demonstrates proper hand positioning, drum positioning, and technique in a very positive way.

I debated between a 3 and 4 star rating. I found Mr. Dworsky's approach to teaching to be very good and easily followed. I would have liked at least one more rythm included. The video and audio quality is very good. I attend a drum circle but wanted something to use at home as a practice guide.

The tough thing for a teacher to do when confronted with a wide range of abilities is keep all engaged and the material pertinent. He has done a good job. I am a "advanced" beginner and was overall pleased with the purchase but think it would have been better served if this was priced lower in that it has 1/4 to 1/3 devoted to promotion of his products.

On balance I have hesitated to buy more of his videos given the cost. Good instruction, limited content.

I've wanted to learn to play the drums (any kind of drums I wasn't too picky) for several years now. I tried using other videos but they seemed to be designed to teach someone who already knew the basics of percussion how to play one specific instrument rather than teaching someone with no background what so ever. I tried drum circles but quickly got left behind by the more experienced players. Gentle Djembe was perfect for me. Alan, teaches in a manner that someone who has never played any percussion instrument before can easily understand. He starts with very basic rhythms which might be frustrating to experienced players who are trying to add djembe to their instrument repertoire but for someone like me are perfect. This is a great resource for a truly beginning djembe player. Now I am working on mastering all the rhythms on the DVD so I can move onto the second one.

P.S. my 18 month old daughter loves to dance around to the drums while I practice which is something I never would have known without this DVD.

Sorry, but this DVD is not 60 minutes of instruction. Much of the video is taken up by interviews with his middle-aged students. And I am middle aged! The instructor seems nice and all, but his rap/teaching is so cornball and dated as to be downright embarrassing. I tried to watch this with my teenaged son and felt like I had to apologize for it. Mr. Dworksy gives verbal cues for remembering the rhythms, such as "Get down tonight!" and "I like candy!" Yeesh. And good old "get down tonight" (which he explains is from the 1970s) was insufficient for one of the (slightly) extended rhythms. Plus who wants KC and the Sunshine Band running through their head when trying to get in touch with heartfelt soul-deep inner rhythms? Finally, there's just not enough instruction on this video to justify the cost. Sending mine back.
