5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide for parents looking for an alternatives, October 26, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gentle Healing for Baby and Child: A Parent's Guide to Child-Friendly Herbs and Other Natural Remedies for Common Ailments and Injuries (Paperback)
Written by a Master Herbalist who has worked with physicians and in her own private practice for the past 25 years, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child is the definitive guide for parents looking for an alternative to common treatments for everyday problems. In an accessible format, this guide includes solutions to ailments that occur both inside and outside the body. Got acne? Try an herbal detoxification, an herbal steam, or some Herbal Zinc Zapper. The Zapper recipe contains a mixture of zinc oxide, peppermint, and comfrey. Got a stressed out teen? Dose him with some Honegar - a mixture of honey and vinegar - to restore his chemical balance. In this book, the authors explain that the "floral nectars that comprise honey contain B vitamins and minerals which are calming to the nervous system." While you've got the honey jar out, don't forget to layer it over your little one's skinned knee before applying a bandage. Honey contains natural "anti-microbial properties."

Also included are sections that address subjects such as "Healing Imagery," as well as instructions for dosing herbs, where to find a local natural health practitioner, how to deal with toxicity, and even testing for food reactions. Herbalist Candee has created a helpful, easy to use guide to natural healing for parents. --Reviewed by Michelle Smith

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Remedies for Parents..or Anyone!, June 7, 2001
By

This review is from: Gentle Healing for Baby and Child: A Parent's Guide to Child-Friendly Herbs and Other Natural Remedies for Common Ailments and Injuries (Paperback)
This book is a resource to revisit again and again. I received "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" as a gift, and was delighted to discover that it's chock-full of suggestions with applications for all family members. The authors have compiled a comprehensive, (but clear and succinct!) collection of natural remedies, illustrations and anecdotes. Introducing a wide range of herbal therapies for day-to-day problems as well as chronic conditions that sometimes can be addressed naturally, Candee does not eschew the value and necessity of skilled, conventional medical care when appropriate. She is a Master Herbalist, experienced and well-versed, and she speaks nationally on her subject, but she also appears to work comfortably within both conventional medical and holistic communities, embracing "the best of what works." Her own parenting experiences are shared in a friendly, comforting way and in clear, simple language. She covers a lot of territory, and often suggests more than one option. In my own work, facilitating mind/body stress-management, I meet concerned parents all around the country beginning to explore integrative therapies and become as informed as possible, to meet their children's health needs, and their own. So I was especially pleased to see that Candee pays considerable attention to the roles of stress-reduction, empowering children, emotional support and compassionate care, with what she refers to as "an educated heart." From acne and allergies...to pneumonia and vaccinations, "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child" allows room for individual philosophies and personal preferences as Candee offers her own expertise with a light, gentle touch. There are many roads to Rome. "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child," is a thoughtful tool for parents, or anyone at all, to include in their decision-making for optimal health and wellness, extremely well-organized, and has an unusually detailed table of contents, as well as a comprehensive index for quick searching.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reference!, February 21, 2002

This review is from: Gentle Healing for Baby and Child: A Parent's Guide to Child-Friendly Herbs and Other Natural Remedies for Common Ailments and Injuries (Paperback)
As a fairly young herbalist myself, i am very pleased with all the informative and varied rememdies suggested in this book. It is very easy to reference and very user friendly; nothing complicated. Andrea Candee offers a gentle manner in her representation of suggested rememdies. I have bought three extra copies to give as baby shower gifts! It's really nice to see such a variation of alternative rememdies/treatment talked about in this book, such as homeopathic, chiropractic, essential oils, onion poultices, and of course herbal preparations. It's nice to be able to make your own decision on a few different suggestions in many cases. It has been a great reference book for myself and other friends with babies as well. I highly recommend this book!!

4.0 out of 5 stars a good start, February 17, 2011
Overall I think is is a very good book with lots of neat tricks to suit the tolerances of the little ones. It is also well written and very available especially for those who are just starting out with the whole "natural and holistic remedies" thing. I have quite a bit of training in the field myself and so found it to be pretty basic and somewhat repetitive. My major disappointment was the fact that she makes many references throughout to Dr. Christopher remedies and although she does provide a list of ingredients seems to imply that you need to buy these rather than giving the formula so that one can do it themselves. This of course is just my preference and like i said the majority of people buying this book will probably prefer just to buy some good quality formulas anyway (I haven't tried the Dr. Christopher formulas myself), at least to begin with. So for this reason, for the more DIY inclined like myself, I would recommend Rosemary Gladstar or Aviva Romm's books. In the end I would recommend having books in hand first, if possible, and from your local independent bookseller of course!

5.0 out of 5 stars Natural Healing is Naturally Great!, June 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Gentle Healing for Baby and Child: A Parent's Guide to Child-Friendly Herbs and Other Natural Remedies for Common Ailments and Injuries (Paperback)
This book is wonderful! It provides useful alternatives to common everyday ailments that are gentle and effective, and it's easy and fun to read, too. Everything you need to know is clearly presented and referenced. The remedies are simple to prepare or obtain, and because they're made from nature's products, you don't have to worry about their effects being too strong for your child, or even yourself. Andrea Candee provides helpful information on how to decide upon which remedy is best as well as how to help "the medicine go down." This is a wonderful reference for every household. I love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding ~ excellent results~, November 8, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I can't praise this enough. As a mother of little children i often feel utterly helpless when they get sick. All the 'regular' medicine for common ailments are for older children or adults and when I take my kids to the doctor, they generally just check their ears and tell me to give them tylanol to keep them comfortable. After following the directions of the author, I am amazed at the results. My toddlers are returned to health in record time; the sickness doesn't progress as it normally does.

She is a clear, easy to read writer. Her advice is from decades of experience and it works! What better solution to our ailments then that which is found in nature?? The procedures are easy to follow, relatively cheap and easy to administer. She addresses herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, and much more. I am so moved by the success of her advice I am now seeking to become an herbalist myself.

Excellent book; i give it the highest recommendation esp for all caretakers of little kids (although, her advice is also applicable to adults).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for reference, September 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I originally bought this book for my sister and she used it so much that I bought one for myself. It has some remedies for some common aliments which are good to try prior to conventional therapies. It gives the dosing for babies and children (not that the FDA approves herbs) which is beneficial because sometimes you can look things up online but don't how much to give to a baby or child. Most things recommended are very gentle, such as chamomile for an upset stomach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy to have..., May 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book hoping to find out more about natural remedies for common ailments my toddler may be having and I got exactly what I wanted. I don't like to medicate my toddler everytime something is wrong, so it was nice to be able to read up on home made remedies that are natural and healthy.

Good book and I recommend to other parents..

5.0 out of 5 stars use it often, June 27, 2009
This review is from: Gentle Healing for Baby and Child: A Parent's Guide to Child-Friendly Herbs and Other Natural Remedies for Common Ailments and Injuries (Paperback)
Love it!!! I have quite a few, but this is probobly my favorite healing book. It dosent include as many disorders as some bigger books, but, I go back to this book so often, and can apply some of the knowledge to other ailments when using common sense. I enjoy how the author writes; easy to understand; also makes me feel confident to prepare many of these remedies. Enjoy.
