This product works very well. It stopped my 'sled dog' shepherd from pulling against the lead the very first time it was used (She was pulling on the collar so hard that she was constantly choking, gagging, and even throwing up). The only problem I've had with the gentle leader (other than price) is getting the right size. My dog is a border line small-medium dog with an average muzzle size. The nose loop on the small tends to be too small while the collar on the medium is too big. Needs more overlap on the nose loop with the next size up. If you have a big muzzle dog you'll need to get one size bigger than indicated.

I don't review things on Amazon very often, but I was absolutely amazed at this product.

Some seem to think it's cruel or inhumane to use this headcollar. Let me tell you what is cruel and inhumane - having a dog you are unable to walk, and who therefore must be confined to a yard for life. I have a wonderful Labrador; he's 9 years old and perfectly submissive and obedient in the house. On a leash; however, he turns into a pulling, unbelievably excited animal that I am unable to control because he outweighs me by 30 pounds.

Picture a huge, 135 pound dog pulling a skinny little woman down the street - on her side.

That was me, and that last road rash incident caused made me give up walking him. I have a very big backyard, and I actually thought that was good enough. However, watching Cesar Millan's television show,"The Dog Whisperer" made me realize that I was wrong. Dogs need to get out.

I tried to walk him again myself but was still unable to accomplish it without injuring me and my dog.

Then, I found this collar.

It worked instantly. We just had the first long, peaceful walk of our lives. He walked by my side, happy and content, all through the neighborhood. It was wonderful. He wasn't unhappy, he didn't seem pained - he tried to paw it off the first minute and then we were fine.

Dogs need to walk and this has enabled me to give my dog what he needs.

Yes, I am sure there are many people who are able to train their dogs without using a collar like this, but for a variety of reasons, I was not one of them.

If you are not either, then this collar might be for you. Read the instructions so it works for you, so you do it right - and then give your dog the exercise he needs.

If you are looking for a collar that does not cause injury to your pet and family member you should try the Premier Gentle Leader Headcollar. I am a certified veterinary technician and animal behavior consultant. Too many times I have witnessed clients at our clinic who are using choke collars, prong collars, and regular collars to control and walk their pets. Often these types of collars have no effect on the dog and instead only hurt the dog. Think about having a collar wrapped around your neck and someone pulling on it with a leash and you will understand how inhumane these items are. The Gentle leader headcollar is a proven and safe training collar, backed by numerous dog trainers and by the Purdue University Animal Behavior clinic. The concept is that instead of pulling and choking your pet you gently remind them that you need their attention. The nose loop is not a muzzle and is not an aggressive form of behavior control as indicated by the previous critic on this review. There is a collar attachment which goes around the neck, up high just behind the ears and with the nose loop loosely applied and the neck portion snugly attached this collar has numerous beneficial effects on your pet's behavior. You do not tug on the collar but, gently guide your pet's head so that they heel when walking. This also is great for preventing jump and barking. So long as you utilize this collar in an appropriate manner, and follow the guidelines for application and use provided by Premier, you will not hurt your pet. Instead you will develop and much better relationship with your pet in a minimal amount of time and without torturing them or physically harming them.

I own a rescued German Shepherd who has done extremely well in the past six months since we adopted her. She was always kept outdoors prior to adoption, and now has perfect indoor manners. She has mastered walking on a loose leash..... except when we pass a smaller dog that acts aggressively towards her.

She goes nuts over small dogs and try as I might, I haven't been able to correct this behavior.

She pulls with such force that it's a danger to both her and the person walking her.. not to mention it scares other people! My vet advised me on the Gentle Leader and I'm absolutely amazed with the results. Unlike a pinch or a choke collar, this device ensures that you are controlling the upper neck and muzzle area at all times.... instead of the base of the neck where a dog is strongest. It's easy to keep her in line using only the muscles in my wrist and forearm.

I have used it 8 years for my dogs and our obedience trainers use it on regular basis. It is an excellent training device to prevent pulling and is not based so much on "alpha" theory described above but on fact that dogs pulling strength is more than 10 times lower when restrained by head. It basically works like horses head collar, restraining and leading the head. Dogs tend to pull against pressure. If dog realises that it can not drag you along with it no matter how hard he pulls he just stops pulling. If you control dogs head you control the dog. If you control the dog it will obey and you will become a leader. A gentle one, because no yelling or no negative reinforcement is involved, just a device what makes you physically stronger then your dog. That's how Gentle Leader works as a general obedience device.
Gentle leader is essential for giant breed owners first for safety on walking as dog is always physically under owners control and second for preventing owners shoulder injuries.
I have tried also Halti but find Gentle Leader nose strap being softer and gentler for nose fur. Also Gentle Leader keeps better on when dog pulls backwards, Halti usually comes off then.

As a private dog trainer, I can honestly say this is one of my favorite products. Properly fitted, the Gentle Leader causes no pain or discomfort to the dog. In the beginning, it is normal for the dog to struggle a little but, but that's only because dogs typically do not take kindly to anything new being placed on their body. To ease your dog into the head collar, give him lots of love and attention (food too) when you put it on him. Never shout or punish your dog for his attempts to remove the collar, as this will only raise his stress level.

I put all of my clients on the Gentle Leader right away, and you wouldn't believe the results!

They call it the 10 minute attitude adjuster & it is just that!! Me & my fiancee have not had enough time to really train our dog Harley correctly yet because of work schedules & being on vacation, but the few times we have had it on him it totally changes him. I am a firm believer that this product works great. Harley is a 68lb Pit Bull/Shepard mix & unbelievely strong. It is all my 200lb financee can do to not be dragged by Harley when we go for walks with a regular collar & leash, & I hardly ever try unless I want a good workout during my walk!! But Harley totally changes when the Gentle Leader is put on him. He stops pulling & dragging us & he minds better & listens to his commands better with it on. He was even around a few other dogs when he had it on & he totally ignored the other dogs (which he NEVER does)!! I can't wait until we have more time to finish training him with the Gentle Leader. It is a life saver & you don't look like an idot trying to walk the dog anymore!!
