Book Description

May 6, 2002
Every woman who has an adolescent daughter recognizes her own forgotten questions and insecurities mirrored in those bright young eyes. How can she let her know that she understands these changes, too strange and intimate for her daughter to mention? How can she make the passage into womanhood not a shameful, unpleasant experience but a harmonious and joyful one -- an invitation to a treasured role in God's eyes? Robin Jones Gunn shares stories of how this uncertain transition can become the loveliest time in the life of a mother and daughter, inspiring women with special traditions to carry on for generations to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful! Simply Needed! Simply Super!, November 19, 2002

I am a huge fan of Robin Jones Gunn..have litterly grown up with her books! Even though I don't have kids and am not married I had to buy the newsest book by my favorite author. I read this book within 30 minutes and just had tears in my eyes..just thinking about the day when I get to do these awesome things with my daughter. This book puts in simple ways how you make this journey into womenhood so much more special. I read about the Wildflower dreams from Ms. Gunn's book "Until Now" and quickly went and found my own wildflowers. I am looking for the opporutnity to start the china plate tradition with my little sister as well as with my aunts and my mother. THank You Mrs. Gunn for a wonderful and much needed book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas, November 1, 2007

This review is from: Gentle Passages: Guiding Your Daughter into Womanhood (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful little book full of ideas for ways to help ease your daughter, or other girl in your life, into womanhood. Many generations never talked about these things and it is helpful to me to have some ideas. I modified the idea about the china plate and used it with a girls' Sunday School class I teach. They had a sleep over at my house and I served them cream puffs on my grandmother's china while I talked to them bout being "God's fine china plate". You can easily adapt some of these ideas to fit your needs. I am sure there are people out there who don't need help with this but it is a very sweet book and it sure helped me! This would also make a great gift to a friend whose daughter is just entering this stage of life. It is set up beautifully and very much a "gift book", not just informational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas to use in your own way, August 13, 2008

This review is from: Gentle Passages: Guiding Your Daughter into Womanhood (Hardcover)
I loved this book from the first time I picked it up, even though I knew I would not present most of the items the way they were in the book. LOVE the china plate idea, even though we are not a sentimental, let's have a tea party type family. We still found a way to incorporate the idea. When our daughter turned 13, we gave her the plate for her birthday. We, of course, explained what it meant and we got a plate hanger and hung it on her bedroom wall. She has gotten the chance to explain it to her friends over the years when they want to know what she is doing with a plate hanging on her wall. Gives them food for thought.... I also will go in her room before she is going out with friends or on a date now that she is older (17) and will point to it and remind her not to forget. We are planning on her and her husband eating their first slice of wedding cake on it, like it suggests in the book. There are ways to use the ideas in the book without having to copy everything to the letter.
