Enthusiastic instructor Dagmar Munn guides viewers through a series of fun, easy movements adapted from traditional tai chi. Although Munn's routine could offer health benefits to anyone, it seems clear that her target audience is those who find strenuous exercise difficult, as she performs a few stretches and a short workout while seated. The warm-up section begins with a series of self-massages to improve flexibility and circulation, followed by Munn's series of low-impact standing exercises. She runs through her whole routine first (it takes about six minutes) before breaking it into individual moves with detailed instructions. Throughout, a multitude of camera angles show exactly what's going on. The simple movements are accentuated with Munn's subtle tips on breathing and her lucid images for each movement, such as polishing a tabletop. It's not orthodox tai chi by a long shot, but offers a thorough, simple workout for those who wish to keep moving without too much huffing and puffing. --Grant Balfour

From the Actor

From the Director: Tai Chi is a popular form of fitness training that improves balance, muscle tone, and flexibility. Often described as "swimming on land," it also is comparable to slow motion walking, but with gentle, soft, and rounded movements performed slowly and with precision. A centered mind directs the flowing graceful movements that makes this fitness discipline aesthetically pleasing to watch as "meditation in motion." There is also a seated version of the routine included for special needs.

The Arthritis Foundation has endorsed Tai Chi for arthritis pain relief. According to an Arthritis Foundation spokesperson, Tai Chi is the basis for one of their most popular exercise programs.

I HAVE WATCHED A DOZEN OR MORE VIDEOS ON THIS SUBJECT AND LIKED THIS ONE THE BEST FOR MY PHYSICAL BEING. IT WAS EASY TO FOLLOW, DOWN TO EART AND HAD MANY OF THE BEGINNING TAI CHI MOVES I ALREADY KNEW. I DID NOT GET THE FEELING THAT I NEEDED TO BE AN EXPERT IN ORDER TO DO THESE MOVES AS I HAVE FELT WATCHING AND USING OTHER TAI CHI VIDEOS.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great way to excercise!, December 10, 2001
By A Customer
I can only rave about this wonderful guide to tranquility/excercise. I have enjoyed learning Tai Chi with my partner and we have actually woke early during the warm months just to do our Tai Chi as the sun rose. What a great way to start the day! Had a stressful day? Just pop in the video and stretch your strss away!

This review is from: Gentle Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have severe spine and hip problems, and Tai Chi was recommended by my physician. After some research, I decided this sounded like the best introduction -- especially considering my physical limitations. It is perfect in every way, with gentle routines, easy to understand and I'm already feeling the benefits in my flexibility, endurance, balance. It also provides a general all-around good feeling.

It's particularly nice that there are two routines offered on the tape, one for standing and one for sitting. Due to my physical problems with my hip, I can't stand but all the benefits are coming to me with just the sitting down routine. There isn't anything on the tape I can't do sitting down.

My husband is also doing the routines -- he does the standing ones while I do the sitting ones. He has a problem with neck pain and limitation of movement in that area and has seen chiropractors for this for some time. The chiropractic has helped some, but this tape has provided so much more flexibility and help with his pain that he now is only doing the Tai Chi.

My husband was quite sceptical of Tai Chi and reluctant to try it, but he's amazed and now it's a part of our daily routine and nice to share together.

I highly recommend this tape for anyone who is either a beginner or who has any type of physical limitations. We plan to move on to more advanced techniques at some point; but, without this tape as a foundation, we probably would never have realized how beneficial Tai Chi could be for us.
