4.0 out of 5 stars Romance in Bahama, February 5, 2011

This review is from: The Gentleman Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a simple read of Regency romance which was all taken place in one of the tropical plantations in Bahama. The story was about a 18 year old Sheila O'Donnell who was taking care of the island estate for Lord Lionel Maitland when the owner himself returned to the plantation with a group of London friends. Their behaviors and way of life were too dizzying for the innocent Sheila; Especially Lord Lionel, a scarred warrior, who could be gentle, thoughtful one minute but rude and hateful another minute, and yet they were drawn to each other.

The writing was, as I have mentioned, very simple: words were simply used, paragraphs were direct, no elaborate or wordy vocabularies; In fact, it was like reading a foreign children story. It was a bit too plain at first, but after a while, one could start to feel the simplicity of life there and innocence of a girl untouched by the "ton", so it actually worked well in this case.

I also liked the beautiful scenery described in the book. What I didn't like was the way author portrayed natives talking--all the broken English somehow distracted the flow of the read for one thing, and also made them sound uneducated for another. And Sir Lionel should have stepped in to intervene those drunken, wild London friends earlier. I felt Ms. Radcliffe could have done a better job than that. Otherwise, a nice read.
