Book Description

March 15, 1999
Old Texas would give way to new-- but not without a fight...

They called it Hell's Half Acre: a violent sinkhole of dance halls and brothels, gaming dives and busthead saloons. To some citizens of Fort Worth, the only hope for Hell's Half Acre was to reform it. To others, it was a gold mine. And for one man, a shootist and gambler named Luke Short, it was a place to make a stand. Short wants to run an honest game with straight odds and build a future in Fort Worth. But plenty of people want to see him stone-cold dead. Now Short has no choice but to stake his claim, from behind the barrel of a loaded gun...

Review

"Braun is a master storyteller of frontier history."-- Elmer Kelton, author of Cloudy in the West

About the Author

Matt Braun is a fourth-generation Westerner, steeped in the tradition and lore of the frontier era. His books reflect a heritage rich with the truths of that bygone time. Raised among the Cherokee and Osage tribes, Braun learned their traditions and culture, and their philosophy became the foundation of his own beliefs. Like his ancestors, he has spent most of his life wandering the mountains and plains of the West. His heritage and his contribution to Western literature resulted in his appointment by the Governor of Oklahoma as a Territorial Marshal.

Braun is the author of more than forty novels and four nonfiction works, including BLACK FOX, which was made into a CBS miniseries. Western Writers of America awarded Braun the prestigious Golden Spur Award for THE KINCAIDS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Historical account of gunfighter Luke Short, July 28, 1999

This review is from: Gentleman Rogue (Mass Market Paperback)
A living history of Fort Worth's "half-acre" featuring several legendary charactors straight out of the Wild West-Luke Short,Jim Courtwright,Bat Masterson,Wyatt Earp, and the Heavyweight Champion of the World-John L. Sullivan plus many more.It delves into the "sporting life" of the era with all the vigor Braun portrays in his other classic novels such as Noble Outlaw,Wyatt Earp,&Black Fox to name a few.I recommend this book for all the one's who desire the days when disputes were handled by the law of the gun.
