More About the Author

Orphaned by World War II, Van Sant worked his way through childhood at dozens of crazy jobs. He learned to sail early by borrowing sailing skiffs from beach lifeguards. After university he got a job and a sailboat with a plan that, when the sailboats got big enough, he'd get out of the rat race and go sailing to simpler places for a simpler life.

He spent four decades of cruising, working, writing and speaking in countries of Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, picking up six languages along the way, four of which he used well enough to make a living on local economies. By 1979 he had settled into cruising the myriad islands between Florida and South America.

Having long ago "copped out" or "gone Galt", Van Sant no longer copes as a tiny cog in the big machines of the so-called developed countries. He got used to living freely, without every step insured or hobbled by cat's cradles of regulations, government programs, monthly bills and nettling bosses. He lives without ever-present signs of "NO smoking", "NO fishinig", "No swimming, loitering, littering, entry, passing, parking in the park -- NO!".

The younger, freer America where he grew up haunts visits home, where he finds himself longing to escape to the America of his youth. He always did the next best thing and sailed away again. If you want to escape, he can tell you how. You can read some of his and others' adventures in world cruising in Margarita Cat.

Van Sant has, alas, sold his last boat and lives ashore with his wife Rosa in their home, Kembali ke Tanah, high over the sea in the Dominican Republic. See Kembali at www.LuperonCruising.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't let the arrogant tone scare you off, August 29, 2007
This review is from: The Gentleman's Guide to Passages South, 8th ed. (Spiral-bound)
I had a chance to have a beer and talk to Bruce in January in Luperon, D.R. where Bruce lives with his wife. Bruce is very articulate, intelligent , well read and a wealth of sea knowlege. He is also facing some quite debilitating health issues which has pretty much ended his sea going years. His books are filled with great nuggets on weather windows, island hopping and beating the battle with the wind seas. His experience cannot be challenged. Get the book and read it with a highliter !

Good information on Puerto Rico and Spanish Virgins.A lot of local knowledge info. Complements other guides to have on board for this area by Street and Nancy & Simon Scott,as he states in this publication.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Depressing Read, January 27, 2012

Yes, there is lots of good information, although it is scattered about quite a bit. And what Bruce recommends is maybe the best way to do things and maybe not. There are those who contest his advice. I am not knowledgeable enough or experienced enough to say.

What I will say is that I get real tired of reading over and over and over how incredibly smart and competent and savvy this guy is, and how ignorant and clumsy and stupid everyone else is. After the first ten anecdotes, I get it. You're the guy - you're amazing - your book is selling for $ 800 on Amazon because it's out of print. Well, I got my copy free and I'm glad I didn't pay, because I just can't read it anymore. Too depressing. I guess I'm just worried that I'm not going to be as smart as Bruce ...

There are lots of good books and guides out there, including the excellent Explorer charts. And there are a number of forums free to bop around in on the internet. You'll find them much more uplifting and encouraging than this 'Gentleman's Guide'.
