The folks behind Napoleon Dynamite proved themselves to be comedic quirk-masters, and Gentlemen Broncos fits right into Napoleon's moon boots. Michael Angarano stars as Benjamin, a self-conscious, home-schooled teen whose aspirations of being a science-fiction writer are played out Walter Mitty-style. His doting mother (Jennifer Coolidge) treats him to a weekend at a writing camp, where Benjamin meets his idol, sci-fi author Ronald Chevalier (Jermaine Clement, The Flight of the Conchords). Benjamin submits his "Yeast Lords" manuscript to Chevalier for the big-time writer's approval. But Chevalier is struggling for a hit book and he promptly plagiarizes Benjamin's work. Director Jared Hess cowrote Gentlemen Broncos with his wife, Jerusha Hess, and they do a fine job of capturing grimacingly painful, but funny trials of adolescence. The 'nad jokes and gross-out humor get a little stale, but the Hesses have assembled a brilliant, watchable cast. Angarano gives Benjamin a lovable, nerdy touch. Coolidge chalks up yet another comedic character role, complete with appliquéd sweatshirts and floral vests. Clement nearly steals every scene as the laughingly pompous sci-fi author Chevalier. Mike White turns in a fine performance as Dusty, Benjamin's mom-appointed guardian angel. Héctor Jiménez (Nacho Libre) and Halley Feiffer round out the cast as friends who want to help make Benjamin's "Yeast Lords" dream come true by filming an ultra-low-budget, amateur version of his story. As with Napoleon Dynamite, the cast's clothing is as funny as some of their lines. --Francine Ruley

Product Description

Mount your battle stag, grab a popcorn ball and get ready to laugh your head off at Gentlemen Broncos! The director of Napoleon Dynamite (Jared Hess) and co-star of Flight of the Conchords (Jemaine Clement) team up to bring you the story of Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano), a lovable loner whose life is turned upside down when a pretentious fantasy author steals his story at a writers camp. Jennifer Coolidge (American Pie) and Mike White (School of Rock) join a hysterical cast of oddball characters in this 'fun, quirky comedy.' (People)

4.0 out of 5 stars Why such brutal reviews? March 2, 2010
Format:DVD
I had seen reviews for this movie on Rotten Tomatoes and rated on IMDB and can't understand why it got such horrible reviews. I just watched this movie tonight and found it absolutely hilarious from start to finish. Clement and Rockwell are great, and Mike White makes me bust out laughing in every scene he is in. This is an exceedingly original film, I can't think of anything to compare it to off the top of my head, and the fact that Cher and the Scorpions are both in the soundtrack makes all the more loopy. PLEASE GIVE THIS MOVIE A CHANCE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Broncos - Thoroughly enjoyable! March 2, 2010
By Ladfam
Format:Blu-ray
As soon as I heard about Jared Hess' latest project, I was excited to see it - even before the Dr. Chevalier viral videos were released.

So I was a tad let down to hear the negative buzz surrounding the film, and to discover it wouldn't be playing in any nearby theaters.

Even still, I decided to take a chance and purchase it on BluRay instead of renting. I'm one of the minority who really liked not only Napoleon Dynamite, but ALSO enjoyed Nacho Libre (typical response to Nacho Libre was poor). So I figured Gentlemen Broncos was a safe bet. ...and it turns out that it was!

Admittedly, there are a couple of "what the heck" scenes (particularly those involving Halley Feiffer) which I think some will find a bit off-putting if not totally repulsive, but overall the film is chock full of hilarious gems. (The PG-13 rating was due primarily to crude humor. There was one instance where "ape sh**" was used, but no swearing beyond that.)

I thought all of the characters were very well-played by their respective actors. Jemaine Clement's Ronald Chevalier is often cited as the show-stealer, and for good reason, but I found myself wanting to see more of Sam Rockwell's Bronco character. His near-hillbilly (fantastic southern accent) action hero portrayal was delightful to watch. I laughed hysterically at his "What the crap?!" reaction upon waking up in Daysius' lab.

It did seem like there could've been more extra features, but maybe that was because I'd seen many of them (the "Webspots") online prior to the release. The behind-the-scenes was a treat, which I would also liked to have seen more of, but the outtakes made up for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hess Best March 1, 2010
Format:DVD
I went into this movie knowing NOTHING about it. And I LOVED it. For me personally this is Hess' best film. It's incredibly quirky, there are so many great moments. Sam Rockwell is comic gold. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who liked his other films at all.

I would also like to say that I think the price of the DVD is pretty ridiculous and will inevitably spurn piracy. I am torn about buying it. I want a copy pretty badly but I don't know if I should wait the price out or not.

Then you'll love this movie about a likeable young man who goes to a writers convention to meet his hero and show his talents only to have his work plagarized by the author.

After seeing Nacho Libre and Napolean Dynomite, I wanted to see this as well (same directors). Kind of zany, and very funny and well executed. Loved the ending!!!
