As a non-Russian immigrant from the USSR, I have largely lost (unfortunately) appreciation for Soviet movies - nowadays I'll be lucky to put together two words in Russian, which has been almost entirely replaced by English.
One movie that I still watch, however, and still find gut-bustingly funny is Dzhentlemeny Udachi (this film). The acting, the humor and the Soviet propaganda just make it so delightfully hilarious (and to some extent camp), that I can't see myself not watching this film at least once a year.
There are lots of other Soviet comedies that are funny, but most of them have lost their appeal. That's not something I can say about this film which has the best replay value of all Soviet comedies - at least for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh your heart out!, November 19, 2004

This is one of the best comedies that were produced during the Soviet time. It's funny, pointed, and represents the best of Russian humor. All actors who play in this movie are the elite of Russian cinematography and hold a very special place in every Russian heart. Those who think of Russia as a gloomy grey place will be pleasantly surprised by this light-hearted, clean comedy, with its quotes being a staple of Russian language. What Wayne's World is for Americans, so Gentelmen of Fortune is for Russians. Strongly recommend it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soviet era comedies, February 8, 2005
This review is from: Gentlemen of Fortune (DVD)
First time I saw this movie when it came out in 1971, I was 7 years old then. I remember, I laughed so hard I fell of the chair in movie theater. Now I don't fall of the chair just because I installed seatbelts on my couch.

What makes a soviet era movie so good is that they all have clean humor pretty much rated `G' without need for profanity and cheap jokes of today's Russian flicks trying to imitate worst of American movie culture.

This movie is still one of my favorites along with Diamond Arm and few others.

My wife, a Russian, turned me on to this movie a few years ago. Since then, it's been one of our favorites. It is definitely worth buying if you have any interest in Russia. So many everyday sayings came out of these old soviet comedies. It's also a more honest portrayal of Russia than we (Americans) have been fed since way back into Cold War times.

It's important to note all the work that Image Entertainment has put into this edition. The audio/video quality is excellent as always. The menu page can be in English or Russian. The subtitles are in many languages including English and Russian. The Russian subtitles are very useful for people like me that have studied the language, but are not completely fluent, and also for the children of Russian immigrants.

A classic Soviet Movie - sort of like a half-comedy, very interesting!! Evgeny Leonov, Georgiy Vitsin, Saveliy Kramarov - unbelievable actors, wonderful performance!

The movie follows the story of an amiable kindergarten director named Troshkin who looks exactly like a criminal called Docent (Äîöåíò, literally associate professor) that has stolen Alexander the Great's helmet at an archeological excavation. Docent and his gang are caught by police, but Docent is imprisoned in a different jail than his mates. Since Troshkin looks identical to Docent, the police puts him in prison with the real criminals to get information about the stolen helmet. He must pretend to be the real felon Docent, so in order to be convincing, Troshkin, a well-educated and good-natured man, has to learn slang and manners of criminals.

I'd recommend this movie to everyone to watch - it's interesting and you don't get tired of watching it. Good quality!
