Editorial Reviews

Review

Gently Bentley is a gem. my BOOKS mag Whybrow's text is snappy and effective, and Melling's Bentley Bear is distinctive and cuddly. It'll be a favourite forever. Ink Perfect for a two year old who likes to crash and bang. Gloucestershire Echo --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher

Bentley is a bear who loves to smash and bash and crash! "Gently Bentley," caution his best friends, Squeaky and Bun. Perhaps bears are just too rough to play with? This riotous picture book by a highly praised team shows how we can all learn to play together. Ian Whybrow is the author of many popular books for children, including The Noisy Way to Bed and the Little Wolf books. Illustrator David Melling is the Kate Greenaway-nominated creator of books that include The Tale of Jack Frost and The Kiss That Missed.

I was hoping for a book to teach my child to be gentle with her toys. It somewhat addresses that, but more importantly, Bentley frequently exclaims "Blow it" as a G-rated expletive. I just don't want my child to pick that up as a phrase. Granted, it is G-rated, but it would be nice not to have a phrase like that at all.

I picked up this book from our library thinking it would have a great lesson about being gentle with toys. Boy was I wrong. The bear was rough and not only broke his toy but also broke his friend's toys. His actions were justified because he was a bear and bears are just rough with toys. Not a good example in respecting other's things.
