Book Description

October 2004
From the hard knocks of South Brooklyn to a life of achievement and service, The Gent’s Prayer is the compelling autobiography of one man who overcame family hardship, gangs, low self-worth, and crime to find his calling to defend others. Louis Gelormino, currently the deputy commissioner and counsel for parole in New York City, started his life as a gang member with no hope and no future. But while awaiting trial, he turned his life around, then overcame every obstacle he faced and embarked on a career of defending the poor in the name of justice.

About the Author

Born in South Brooklyn, author Louis Gelormino overcame a difficult family environment: the death of his father at age 13, his mother’s long suffering from a debilitating disease, and his brother’s victory in a courageous battle with drug addiction. Louis was delivered from a street gang, "The Little Gents," through the energies and unselfish love of dedicated individuals such as Mary Sansone and the Congress of Italian-American Organization (CIAO). In addition, Louis attributes his success and achievements to his faith in God, which he received from his mother, Rose Gelormino.

As a young adult, Louis committed himself to defeating the adversities of his early childhood. During his high school years, he took on diverse responsibilities as a family worker, youth counselor, and ironworker. He was the first Italian American to be awarded a full scholarship from the College Discovery Program at the borough of Manhattan Community College of New York (BMCC) and the City College of New York (CCNY).

Upon earning his bachelor’s of arts degree, Louis was beginning to taste victory. Next, he was the first Italian American to receive a full scholarship from the council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) to Temple University School of Law, where he received his jurisprudence (J.D.) degree.

From a humble beginning, through many personal hardships and difficulties, scholastic challenges, and the hurdle of professional obstacles, Louis has achieved the position of deputy commissioner of law, employment, and special projects for the New York City Department of Probation from May 2002 under Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and his present position as deputy commissioner and counsel to the Local Conditional Release Board under present Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

5.0 out of 5 stars the gents prayer, March 10, 2005
This review is from: The Gent's Prayer: A Tale of Transformation Through Faith in Jesus Christ (Paperback)
In Lou Gelormino's world, he was the kid that the meek feared and the bullies emulated - being poor was his license to steal. The gangsters were his role models. His friends, like Vinnie Mophead, would rather hang off the roof of a four-story brownstone than do what was right. The turnaround began when Lou was brutally stabbed and facing a judge.
Could a person like this be saved from his self-scripted path of disaster? Could it happen to you or your loved ones? Read this book if you are in trouble and looking for a way back....read this book if you don't believe in God....read ths book if you are a minister. No matter who you are or what you do, this book will make you examine your past and give you inspiration to better your future. This book is a must for everyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Against All Odds, September 4, 2011
This review is from: The Gent's Prayer: A Tale of Transformation Through Faith in Jesus Christ (Paperback)
Lou was raised in a working class family where money was scarce and he and his brothers did what they had to survive. When his father died the family fell into a new level of poverty. Lou joined a gang, his brothers involved with drugs and gang activity were forced to do jail time, and his mother became mentally unstable. Lou's life was taking a bad turn but, he gets in trouble, is represented by a legal aid lawyer and decides that's what he wants to be. One day he met a woman named Mary Sansone (one of God's angel's on earth) who offered to show him a way out of the tumultuous life he was leading. God had a plan for Lou Gelormino's life which henceforth begins to unfold. Against all odds and with no tangible reason to think he could succeed, Lou progresses through college and law school. He meets God along the way which transforms his life and brings new hope and dreams into fruition. Take this journey through the dangers and disappointments of the life of one chosen young man in South Brooklyn to find out how God makes the impossibile, possible!
