If you are purchasing this kit you are probably an enthusiast that works on their own car and has the mechanical skills and tools needed for this project. While I meet those criteria, this lock kit was a big source of frustration for me. Before ordering this kit I suggest you do a Google search for ‘BMW E30 lock repair’ and you will find a personal web site with plenty of photos and a description of the job you will be taking on.

The pros: This kit contains everything you need to build an improved lock that works with your existing key, and fits your old BMW perfectly.

The cons: No directions are included. The only documentation is a parts diagram written in German, which I think is of little value for a product sold in the United States. The tolerances and quality of the individual pieces was poor. About half of the tumblers had burrs on the edges and would not insert smoothly into the cylinder. Thankfully there were plenty of duplicates in the kit. The lock cylinder, housing, and the double-lock mechanism all fit together much too tightly. Even when lubed with the included grease, I was at first barley able to turn the lock. What solved the problem was assembling it basically one piece at a time, working the lock until it turned freely, disassemble to clean out all the accumulated metal filings, then reassemble adding one more piece, and repeat until the whole lock assembly was together and turning easily.

In closing, while you have your lock out of your door and the interior panel off, this is a good time to clean and lubricate the latch and lock mechanism which remains inside the car’s door.

Great part! Suggest buyer watch youtube video on installation procedure as this kit contains many small pieces. It will help determine the order of things during the rebuild. Lets you reuse the original key.

Takes a while to assemble, but works great. Tested 1 tumbler at a time to determine the key sequence, then assembled the lock.

It works. I was able to rebuild the lock but I feel like the action of the pieces could definitely be smoother in both inserting the key and turning the lock. I was hoping for better but at least me door opens now.
