Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2–6—In a letter to his son Hector, Sir Geoffrey de Lance explains that he is being held captive by a French knight and is writing this book to instruct the boy in the ways of knighthood in hopes that he will someday come to his rescue. The following 14 double-page chapters cover the basics of this celebrated profession, including weapons and equipment, training, heraldry, jousting, castle building and sieges, questing, peacetime pursuits, battles, and tales of famous knights real and fictional. Only a few sentences on each topic are provided, and the spreads rely heavily on colorful illustrations, diagrams, pop-ups, pull tabs, and foldouts. The elegant, tea-toned pages re-create the look of an antique manuscript, and the visuals are attractively arranged. A board game called "Squire Fight" is included along with several easy-to-lose playing pieces, and some of the flaps may not hold up to overly enthusiastic perusal. This fun-to-browse book is most appropriate for gift giving or display.—Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal

This review is from: A Genuine and Moste Authentic Guide: Knight: A Noble Guide for Young Squires (Genuine & Moste Authentic Guides) (Hardcover)
I purchased this for my nephew (11) for summer reading. It's a very nice hardcover book with a glossy and colorful cover. The inside pages are similar to all of the "ology" books with the pull out messages, envelopes to open, little things to find and a pop up castle. Even though it's suggested for grades 2-6, It's not something most 6th grade kids will spend time reading. I would suggest this for a younger child...maybe around age 7 or 8 (depending on their reading level) It's well worth the $[...] sale price.

Candlewick Press does an amazing job of enthralling young readers. Their books are beautiful works of art and my sons spend hours enjoying every detail of these amazing books. I don't know how they can put together such a detailed book for such a low price. The Knight Guide is just as enjoyable and lovely as the OLOGY books published by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved this book, August 19, 2008
A Kid's Review
I got this book for my birthday from my parents and I love it. It has a cool sword that comes in and out, a pop-up visor, a castle drawbridge that goes up and down. Parts of it are funny and I learned a little more about what it took to become a knight.
