It is a nice large armrest, but it has some design enhancements that it could stand to make.

1. Mount points are just steal beams. They are not finished with anything but black paint, and they stand out as unfinished in the car. The could use some sort of dressing (plastic, or leather) that would fit into the design of the car.
2. Blocks hand break. The arm rest is so large and long, or sits up too far on its mounts that it blocks the handbreak. Before you put the handbreak on you have to lift the arm rest.

After having my r56 S a month, I found I really missed having an center armrest, was getting annoyed at trying to find places to put my elbow on long drives. I found this on a Mini parts website, and then found it less expensive on Amazon. It was simple to install by removing just two bolts, and sliding it into place, then replacing the two bolts that were removed.

The armrest functions very well as an armrest. Some other reviewers complained about access to the hand brake, at that you have to lift the armrest to engage the handbrake. Not sure what they are griping about, it takes little to no effort to lift up the armrest to gain access to the handbrake lever. If you are going to be racing your Mini and require instant access to your handbrake lever, you probably don't need this product in the first place. My Mini is a daily driver and I take it on long road trips which this armrest makes more enjoyable.

The storage compartment is not very large, but it is big enough for my sunglasses and a couple other small items. Anything bigger I toss in the glove box or the dash compartment.

All in all this was a good purchase for me.

It looks very nice, so the struggle to install it was worth it. It will make the drives that Connie (my True Love) and I take together even more enjoyable. There are, however, three concerns that you should look into prior to purchase:

(1) Although it is supposed to fit my 2010 Mini Cooper S, it doesn't look exactly like the arm rest in the owners' manual. The fit, it should be noted, is perfect, and it works fine.

(2) It is a bit of a challenge to operate parking break, mainly because the armrest does not go fully up - Rather than 90 degrees of movement, we are looking more like 70 degrees. A minor nuisance and a bit of a mystery. Would be nice if it would move 120 degrees. Some folks will, understandably, not want an armrest.

(3) Installation is _not_ for everyone. Most folks will need to learn how to do the installation from youtube, but that will not be enough. I had to draw on a few master mechanic tricks during the installation. More than just loosening the seat rails with a T-40 to get some maneuvering room - I had to bring out the biggest screwdriver in the toolbox to persuade the bumps on the brackets to align with the holes in the rails. About half of my friends could do the installation without any problems, the other half would probably call me on the phone, inviting me (and, of course, Connie, as well) over for dinner and then wanting me to help out after dinner.

The cost, for many folks, will be an issue. It seems to cost WAY more than it appears to be worth. Then again, YOU have a Mini Cooper which was made by BMW, so what did you expect? Anyway, after a few months of enjoying your new arm rest (and storing all sorts of stuff in the compartment), you will forget the cost - unless of course, you should be driving something less expensive to operate and need a different car. Unfortunately (for most folks), nothing except a Mini Cooper feels and looks like a Mini Cooper.
