Don Wise's 3rd CD is a Home Run!,

This review is from: Genuine Snake (Audio CD)
Don Wise did something right with his third album. This collection is a must have for the consummate dancer. It's a seamless blend of blues and beach, and a valuable addition to the play library of many a Carolina Shag or West Coast Swing deejay. The proof is in the pacing, with the album almost completely featuring well engineered dance tracks (the exception is the oddly amusing Shoppin' For Clothes). The most accessible track for dance is Lots Of Flame (But No Heat), with a pure sax riff that fits a lot of orders. The opening track No Longer A Part of Your Dreams, is about as pure of a Shag song as you're going to get (with vocals from George Hawkins Jr.). I'm a sucker for a great female vocal, and I like both of the pieces with Teresa James. These selections include Deeper Shade Of Blue (written by Don and his wife, a really fun bluesy track) and Louisiana Moon. If you aren't careful, you'll miss the two hidden instrumentals not listed on the liner notes, the first starts after 30 seconds of silence on the final track "Genuine Snake." The second piece starts 30 seconds after the first bonus has finished and they both last for about 4 minutes and sound like they are pure studio jams (my favorite kind of bonus track). This is the pinnacle of the Don Wise solo work: highly enjoyable, highly danceable, highly fun. |
