Book Description

April 1, 2009
Vicente Guallart, pioneer of new media in architecture, examines the technological, social and cultural changes inherent in our information society for fresh ways of building in the city. Presenting the last 15 years of his work, this book investigates architecture s ability to construct systems for habitable environments in diverse environmental, social and economic conditions. His collaborations with specialists in geology, anthropology, sociology, engineering, economy, software and interface design have blurred traditional boundaries. The projects follow a "natural" logic, referring to components originating in nature, as well as to environmental systems. A logic that connects nature with the transformations of urban spaces, social organizations, and the digital world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Vicente Guallart's humanism is reflected in his natural environments...Acknowledging the contribution of specialists from other disciplines -- [Guallart] has created a kind of manual for analysing and intervening in the world, with natural order in all its intricacy as the base. --The Architect's Journal

Best Architecture Books of 2009
The best books on architectural theory dissolve hardening of the categories, a commonplace disorder. Guallart s is one of the finest because of how effortlessly he pries apart old credos regarding supposed irreconcilable differences between Nature and high-tech. Best of all, he creates an original and practical vocabulary for thinking through designs to reconcile these seeming contraries. An example is the word rurban referring to designed places of transition between city and country, making discussing architecture of flowing energies a tad more inviting. --ArchNewsNow

5.0 out of 5 stars A seminal and insightful body of work April 5, 2009
Vicente Guallart is an accomplished Spanish architect and a expert in the subject of the new media who in "Geologics: Geography, Information And Architecture" provides the reader with a superbly illustrated and informative survey of the technological, social and cultural changes that have made our contemporary 'information society' what it is today. This 384-page compendium of information addresses architecture's contribution to the construction of systems for inhabitable environments, as well as issues presented by diverse environmental, social, and economic conditions. Addressing a synthesis and synergy of collaborations with specialists and experts in the fields of geology, anthropology, sociology, engineering, economics, software, and interface design in projects affecting urban development, "Geologics" represents a seminal and insightful body of work that will prove an invaluable addition to professional and academic Architectural Studies reference collections and reading lists.
