This text represents a systematic approach to the multifaceted aspects of the physical and human geography of Sub-Saharan Africa. It is designed to expose undergraduate students with little or no geographic training to a variety of contemporary ideas, theories, and concepts in African geography and to their applicability to "real-world" situations. This second edition begins with an overview of the size and the locational and regional dimensions of the African continent. The book is then divided into four parts, organized into 14 chapters that depict the physical-environmental, sociocultural, and development dimensions of Sub-Saharan Africa and the region's prospects fox global integration.

NEW TO THE SECOND EDITION

The intent of this second edition is to provide as comprehensive a coverage as possible on relevant geographical issues pertaining to contemporary events in Sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, we have provided a broader and more up-to-date perspective of maps, illustrations, and data sets. New information and data have been added, but all pieces of information from the previous edition that continue to be relevant to contemporary Africa have been preserved. In addition, we have added two new chapters to the second edition: a chapter that evaluates the condition of transportation, communication, and digital networks, and a concluding chapter that assesses Sub-Saharan Africa's prospects for global integration and for expansion into the world trade market. We have also reorganized the chapters to conform to the four parts for consistency and clarity. The chapter on political landscapes has been thoroughly revised to reflect ongoing democratic reforms sweeping across the continent. The chapter on medical geography has an expanded section on HIV-AIDS to reflect the growing dilemmas and complexities associated with the pandemic. All other chapters have been thoroughly reviewed and revised where appropriate, to ensure that the research and information are kept current.

Wherever possible, we also dispel any misconceptions and misinterpretations about Sub-Saharan Africa. It is hoped that the stereotypical perceptions of the region as a "dark" continent are fading. We present a region with a rich and diverse physical and human resource base and a resilient cultural heritage. We acknowledge the significant contributions that previously ignored segments of African society have made (and that also have been slighted in other volumes), such as the informal sector, women, traditional medicine,, self-help organizations, traditional belief systems, and indigenous political institutions. Despite recognizing these contributions, we nonetheless acknowledge the fact that parts of SubSaharan Africa continue to be mired in crises: poor health care, poverty, debt burdens, gender inequality, ethnic disputes, and political ineptness.
