Shallow info and outdated,
By Bookworm Fairy (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Geography the World and Its People (Hardcover)
When you think about purchasing this book from 2000 you have to keep in mind that it is now outdated. A lot of the statistics have changed in the recent years. For example in the book the European countries still have their own currencies and not the Euro.
But this is not the reason for giving this book 3 stars. When I opened the book on random pages I immediately found confusing information: On one page the book dedicates two short paragraphs to Hong Kong and states correctly that Hong Kong's population is mainly Chinese. Then you find a picture of a Hindu wedding in Hong Kong. This does not make sense to me, especially if you want to portrait a place in just a few sentences. In GeoFacts about Europe the book states that Monaco has the highest population density in Europe. This is misleading unless a teacher can explain the fact that most of Monaco's residents do not in fact live there all year long but keep a residency for tax reasons. I think there might be too much information packed into short units without adequate background info. A student has to read the book carefully and make his or her own follow-up research on facts stated in the book. My children will have to use this book at their school next year. If you are a homeschooler I would recommend to invest your money in different and more up to date books.
