Book Description

West purposely developed a versatile text for bridging the gap between geology and civil engineering that can be used in engineering geology courses taught by either geologists or engineers. Mindful that students enrolled in these courses have diverse backgrounds, the author provides basic information on minerals and rocks, geological processes, and geological investigation techniques. He addresses the relationship of physical aspects of geology to engineering construction and explains how to recognize and provide for geologic factors that affect the location, design, construction, and maintenance of engineering projects.

Engineering applications throughout the text emphasize the direct association of geology and engineering, while sufficient depth in geologic subjects provides a working knowledge of applied geology. Exercises at the end of each chapter are designed for chapter review and problem solving. Some of the end-of-chapter exercises form the basis for laboratory studies on minerals, rocks, maps, geologic processes, and applied geology. Additional problem sets give students an opportunity to relate geologic detail to engineering construction. The liberal array of photos, maps, and diagrams provide extra detail to clarify new concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars a excellent book for civil engineers May 29, 2000
Format:Paperback
This is one of the best books for civil engineers who want to know and study about geology and engineering geology. From the simple geological concept to the groundwater geology, this book covers a wide range of subjects in geology.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hardly any page numbers! July 27, 2013
By NRV85
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The book I received has about one or two pages at most per chapter with page numbers. This is absolutely ridiculous and makes the contents and index almost useless for looking anything up.

I'm not sure if it's just my copy or all the paperback versions, but if you want to be able to look stuff up from the contents/index, you may have to buy the hardback version.

If it's just my copy, I'd like to give a big thank you to the seller... I'll just go through and write in all 500+ page numbers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Geology Applied to Engineering December 25, 2012

This is good book to learn from. Straight forward to read - not over complicated. The book could be greatly improved with better color illustrations.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bought for class, served its purpose April 29, 2012
By Nathan
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book strictly for a class, and used it as strictly. I barely used it for more than to do the weekly assigned homework from the end of each chapter. If you can get the problems from a friend, anything in this book can probably just be Googled instead.
