I've actually had that question asked and also what does the gold look like.
Rise and Fall of San Diego: 150 Million Years of History Recorded in Sedimentary Rocks never answers that question, but is a better geology guide than this book. This book give the reference: Ellsbery,H. 1972,Mines of Julian, Los Angeles : La Siesta Press; and some short history. To really get an idea of the local San Diego geology I think you should read both this book and "Rise and Fall".
