Leaves the reader hungry,
By Langiller (White Salmon, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Geology of Southeast Alaska: Rock and Ice in Motion (Paperback)
Geology of Southeastern Alaska is disappointing. Though clearly written and well organized the book is simply too brief to be 'comprehensive' as described in another 'Amazon' review. (I finished the book in one sitting.) There are excellent geologic maps depicting the various terranes and some nice descriptions of technical details (e.g. reasons for the waxing and waning of glaciers or use of garnet and zircon in dating geologic events.) But there's very little about how the region looked and changed over time and not much about relevant tectonics (though the author is a leading expert.) Instead one finds a description of current land forms with brief references to their origin, perhaps written for a cruise up the Inside Passage.

This review is from: Geology of Southeast Alaska: Rock and Ice in Motion (Paperback)
Geology Of Southeast Alaska: Rock And Ice In Motion by Harold H. Stowell (Professor of Geology at the University of Alabama) is an impressively informative and thoroughly "reader friendly" documentation of Alaska's southeastern landscapes hallmarked by fascinating geological landmarks and natural beauty. Engaging the reader with 152 pages of educated writing enhanced with the inclusion of maps, gorgeous colored and b/w illustrations, Geology Of Southeast Alaska ably serves students and travelers alike as a comprehensive introduction and guide to one of Alaska's most endearing and timeless areas. Geology Of Southeast Alaska is very highly recommended as 140-page compendium of awe-inspiring sights and area maps of Alaska's great geographical underpinnings.
